Trying to get Millie to talk is like trying to pull teeth. She’s giving me nothing. It makes me want to get to know her more.

I feel something intangible connecting me to her, but I’m doing my best to ignore it.

I slide up behind her, my body tingling unexpectedly. I try to show her how to hold the rod but she whips around.

“Because I’m a woman, you just assume I don’t know how to fish?” She steps away from me and casts her line in with perfect form.

I raise my eyebrows. Millie’s the last contestant I expected attitude from.

I look over at Tiffany who shrugs her shoulders.

There’s an awkward silence and then Millie starts critiquing my fishing technique. I can’t tell if she’s joking or not, so I laugh.

Our fingers brush as we walk toward the cozy cabana they’ve set up for us. I can feel the heat between our bodies, and I look over to see if she’s feeling it too.

Her face has no expression, but I notice her breathing heavily.

“Ugh, I hate romantic crap like this,” Millie says quietly, crossing her arms.

I’m starting to wonder why she’s here. She seems as unhappy as I do, but for some reason I feel a bit hurt by it. Am I that hard to hang out with?

She grabs a handful of chips and starts crunching on them loudly.

It takes everything in me not to tell her to chew with her mouth closed.

“So, my favorite thing about growing up in a small town was just how tight-knit it all was. Seattle isn’t like that at all, but I love it there. My best friend Danielle moved there with me. We’ve been besties since we were little.”

She continues to crunch loudly as she talks, and I cringe.

What is happening right now?

I zone in and out of what she’s saying because she’s talking so much and only about herself. I don’t think she’s taken a second to breathe yet.

“Anyway, I guess I’m here to find a soulmate, but I mean a little extra help doesn’t hurt right?” She nudges me.

As in extra benefits from the show? I narrow my eyes and try to figure this woman out.

How is this the same person the Macey and Alex talked about, the same woman I saw comforting Natalie?

“Well, I think…”

“It really is a shame you’re not taller…” she interrupts me. She crunches the chips in her mouth, and I miss the ending of the sentence.

I fake a laugh.

A jolt of electricity shoots up my hand as I touch her arm and she stops talking.

“If I’d known that was all it takes to shut you up, I would’ve done it an hour ago.” I tilt my head, trying to challenge her. She wants to play this game, I’ll play.

She raises one of her eyebrows. “It must be a nice change of pace not talking and thinking about yourself all the time.”

“Touché.”

She licks her lips and I find myself staring at them, wondering what it would be like to kiss them.

What is she doing to me?

I grab a handful of chips and crunch them loudly.
