Like Fiona said, it is reality TV. The bar is low; the bar is not even being yourself, apparently.

By the next afternoon, I feel like I’ve been on a thousand dates. The producers, Cameron and Tiffany are all mad at me as usual. Apparently I haven’t been behaving how they want me to, which means I haven’t been making out with every single one of the women.

I’m ready to cut the day short when I catch a glimpse of Millie on the camera monitor.

“What do you know about her?” I ask Macey and Alex.

“Mills? I adore her,” Alex says.

Macey touches up my face. “She’s one of the only ones that asks us about our lives, besides the Southern girls. Plus, those eyes. If you don’t date her, I will.”

That’s the second time I’ve heard someone say that this week. The first time was Millie to Natalie.

Alex laughs and nods in agreement.

I try to hide my smile. Maybe this date won’t be too bad after all.

In the back of my mind, I’ve been waiting for this date, but I don’t want anyone to know.

Tiffany skips over. “You’ve got fishing and lunch with Millie, then snorkeling with Tamara, then salsa dancing and dinner with Chantelle.”

“How many more of these do I have?” I groan.

I look at Millie on the monitor again. I feel jittery, like I’ve just had a shot of coffee. I haven’t been nervous for any of the dates, but this one, I might be.

“These are the last couple,” Tiffany says. “Well, depending on what you classify as a couple.”

“More than two.”

“It’s definitely more than two…” Tiffany follows my gaze and smiles. “It wouldn’t kill you to get to know them.”

I frown. “It might!”

I’ve managed to keep most of the dates about the activity without a lot of talking. There’s been a few flirtatious exchanges, but it’s more so them flirting with me and I usually have to stop to answer an email or answer my work phone.

We’re still negotiating several deals and contracts and without me there in person, it’s not looking good.

Logically I know this is meant to be beneficial, but right now my company is like a sinking ship and I’m thousands of miles away, unable to help.

My phone beeps and I glance down to see another flood of urgent-sounding emails.

Tiffany glares at me. “Like I said before, I will throw your phone into the ocean. Don’t test me.”

I sigh and shove it in my pocket. I know better than to push her.

Tiffany gives me a warning look and walks off.

I walk over and sit next to Millie on the beach swing. “Hi.”

My body accidentally brushes against hers and I feel a surge of energy between us.

Her eyes widen. “Uh, hi.” She looks at the space between us and then shakes her head.

“Don’t be nervous,” I say lightly. “I’ll try to make it as painless as possible.”

She doesn’t say anything, and her facial expression is hard to read. Not exactly what I expected.

The cameras start rolling and I do the usual explanation of the date activity.
