My phone beeps and I’m reluctant to check it. So far it’s only been bad news. Being at a distance from my company, I don’t know if it’s helping or hindering.

Now more than ever, I really need this to be a success.

The morning breeze flows through the open window. I look back out at the ocean and wonder what my life would be like if this was real.

Would we come here on our anniversary? Would I have kids running around? Would I tell the unusual tale of how we met to our kids?

It seems like a fantasy. Real life isn’t a fairy tale. I know that all too well.

I’ve just finished making myself another coffee when Macey and Alex barrel into my room like a hurricane. At this point I’ve spent more time with them than any of the women.

They pause at the board one of the producers set up with pictures of the contestants and their names.

“Do you remember which date was with which girl?” I ask.

They both look at me with similar bemused expressions.

“How am I supposed to remember them all? It was a lot!”

“Maybe the real test is who you do remember and why.” Alex taps a hairbrush against his hand as he inspects the board.

It might not be the worst idea.

I point to Lana and Macey and Alex laugh. “That was… uncomfortable, obviously.”

I search the sea of faces. I point to Fiona. “She was nice considering I ended up throwing up on her.”

Alex bends over with laughter, tears streaming down his face. “You know that moment is going to go viral.”

I scowl. I don’t want to think about this monstrosity of a show every going to air.

I point to Natalie. “She’s sweet and has a good energy about her. Our date was fun.”

Macey and Alex look at each other.

“What?” I cross my arms.

Macey sets me down in the makeup chair. “We’re just surprised you actually had fun; we didn’t know you knew how to.”

“Ha-ha.”

I would never let them know they’re right. I haven’t had fun in a long time. There’s no time, or maybe I feel like I need to earn it.

“Who else?” Alex fluffs my hair.

“Wait, I know.” Macey looks at Alex.

“Millie,” they say in unison.

“She’s a firecracker that one.” Alex continues to mess around with my hair.

“She’d keep you on your toes for sure,” Macey says. “Not that this is a real relationship or that you want one at all.” She narrows her eyes at me, and I know it’s not because she’s checking my makeup.

“You both know better than anyone thatSweet Romanceis all bullshit.” I look to them for confirmation.

“Mostof the time.” Alex rolls his eyes. “But every now and then, people do find a genuine connection. A few are married with kids. So, you never know.”

“Not that you’re here for that.” Macey smirks.
