I try to think of hypothetical person and what I would want out of a relationship with them.

“…with someone by my side who supports me and has ambitions of their own.”

I see Tiffany smile. Okay, phew.

“Hmm.” Aaron types away on his phone and I look at the crew, director and producers who are all sharing similar looks of anger and disgust.

Tiffany clicks her fingers at Aaron, and he looks up. “Sorry, um, yeah, totally, same.”

I give him a look.

“Totally? Same? You got real deep there.” I roll my eyes.

I wonder if he gets paid for being here or if it’s purely for the good publicity.

Aaron puts his phone down and takes a breath. “I think it’s important to have ambitions as well and…” He sighs, looking out at the ocean. “I guess it would be nice to have someone by my side, and if they had their own ambition they wouldn’t feel neglected by me putting my business first.”

I feel a bit bad for expecting him to open up when I haven’t really. He seems genuine in his answer.

Tiffany gives him a thumbs-up. She must’ve given him notes as well.

I put my hand on his knee, and he looks up and gives me a soft smile.

His phone beeps and I groan. This is going to take forever.

I warn him with my eyes not to answer it, but he does.

The entire set groans.

Macey uses the opportunity to come over and touch up my makeup, but I have a feeling it’s so she can say something to me.

She puts her face closer than usual to mine and looks at my mic.

I cover it with my hand and lightly tap on it so there’s no usable audio.

“He has a massive deal — probably the biggest of his career — today, and he’s under a lot of pressure because he’s not there. Yes, this has been a recurring theme, but trust me, this is a huge deal to him. If you could help.” She pleads with her puppy dog eyes.

I narrow my eyes at her. She knows those eyes work on me.

“Fine.”

“Also, would it kill you to stop acting like he’s fish that’s gone bad? At leastpretendyou’re interested.” She nods slightly to the producers who are watching me like a hawk.

I catch her message.

I have to be on my best behavior.

I really need to read over my contract again. I’m not sure how long this engagement is meant to last. I didn’t really think about any of the logistics of it because what were the odds?

I stop tapping the mic and smile. “That’s so much, Macey. What would I do without you?”

“Look ten years older. Trust me, the camera ages everyone!”

I laugh as she skips through the sand.

Alex comes over to fix my hair and looks like he wants to say something.

“Save it,” I warn. “I already got a talking-to.”
