“Well, there was a bit of groping that went too far, but—” she holds her finger up, “she said that you wanted more and the director wouldn’t allow it. My theory is you rejected her and she stormed off.”

I look off to the side and take a sip of my drink. “No comment.”

I look at her excited facial expression and I can’t help the laugh that escapes.

Millie jumps up. “I KNEW IT! I! KNEW! IT!”

“Don’t think I didn’t notice you’re avoiding my initial question. What brought you here?”

“Cupid?” She sits down and sighs. “I don’t know what they told you, but there was a substantial participation fee for us contestants. Given that they left me here, I doubt they’ll be paying up, though. I doubt they’ll pay the other girls either.”

This is news to me. I had no idea they were paying the women; I thought it was all about the TV exposure. “How substantial?”

She takes a deep breath. “Enough to get me through college and have a little left over. I thought it was a bit insane that they were giving us that much, like I thought they were going to make us strip or rob a bank or something — which I was totally down for, by the way.”

I want to laugh at her comment, but I also feel terrible. I can’t believe they might not pay them. It’s the least they can give them for putting up with me.

I grab my phone and quickly type up an email to Tiffany to make sure all the girls will get paid. “Consider it done.”

I slip my phone back in my pocket and for the first time in a while, I don’t want to answer it.

“Thank you, I appreciate it.” Millie leans over and squeezes my knee.

My body starts to buzz as if she just injected me with caffeine.

“You know what we need?” She leans back in her chair. “We need to de-stress. We need to get your mind off whatever has kept you glued to that phone. We need to go have some freakingfun.” She stands up and twirls around. “We’re in paradise, so let’s enjoy it!”

She smiles brightly and I can’t help but notice how stunning she is. Her long eyelashes, her dimpled smile. It’s more than that, though…

“Okay.”

Millie looks surprised, and I probably mirror her expression. I didn’t expect to agree to her terms, but there’s something about her, something that makes me want to spend time with her.

I watch as she places her drink on the ground and runs and jumps into the pool with a massive scream.

She’s completely different from how she was on set. The on-set version was strained and constricted, this version is… magnetic.

I guess I saw a small snippet of this side of her when she was comforting Natalie, but I don’t know what changed between then and filming… maybe she hated being on camera as much as I did.

Regardless, I’m intrigued to spend more time with her and find out the real her.

I watch as she floats around the pool with her eyes closed and a smile on her face.

The only word in my mind right now issunshine.

CHAPTER 14

MILLIE

Ibounce out of possibly the softest bed ever made with a smile on my face.

For the first time in a while, I’m excited to see what the day holds.

When Aaron came outside with my drink yesterday, I didn’t know how the conversation was going to go.

There were a few moments that took me by surprise, like the discussion about Lana. I found myself feeling comfortable with him. More comfortable than I’ve felt in a very long time.

It was surprising to me that he didn’t know about the money. It made me wonder who the money funnels through and what information various people know. Also, why would they keep that from him?
