After what feels like a lifetime, they take me to a private room.

One of the nurses comes in and gives me a soft smile. “I’m just going to take some blood, okay?”

I nod.

“Your boyfriend is just waiting in the lounge. I can go get him if you want?”

I’m about to explain that Aaron’s not my boyfriend but I’m too busy wondering why he’s still here.

The nurse finishes poking and prodding me and waits for a response.

“Oh, yes. Please get him.”

I still can’t wrap my head around why he’s still here. He probably feels obligated considering I collapsed in his arms.

I’m scared to believe the nice version of him because it was so quickly replaced with a cold shoulder before.

He comes in and I hate that I feel relieved to have him here.

He waits awkwardly at the door.

“You don’t have to stay,” I tell him quickly.

He frowns. “You don’t want me here?”

My heart races. “I just thought you’d have work to do, and I don’t want to keep you.”

He walks over and sits in the chair next to the bed. “I do have work, but it can wait.”

My eyes widen. “I didn’t know that was possible.”

He smiles and my heart flutters.

He leans closer and our eyes connect. “I couldn’t leave without making sure you’re okay. I also wanted to find out what it was you came to talk about.”

I bite my lip. “It’s funny that you’re so curious now. After our night together it was like you didn’t want to know me.”

He gives me a look I can’t quite decipher, then reaches out and grabs my hand. “I wanted to get in contact with you, Millie, but there’s just been so many fires to put out since the show ended.” He sighs. “It’s not an excuse. I just…”

A nurse walks in and Aaron leans back.

“Do you need anything, honey? The doctor will be in shortly.”

I give her a smile. “No, thank you. I’m okay.”

She glances at Aaron and exits the room.

He shuffles his chair closer and grabs my hand again. “After our night together, it scared me how intense everything felt between us. I didn’t want to drag you into my life with all my baggage and all my work.”

My heart thuds in my chest as I study his face. He felt it too. I’m not crazy.

“You could’ve talked to me about it instead of shutting me out.”

He sighs. “You’re right, I could have. I just had this feeling that the second I talked to you, I wouldn’t be able to articulate things the way I needed to. I was so confident that we wouldn’t be able to work things out, that I wouldn’t be able to have you… so it was easier to say nothing at all.”

I squint my eyes. “So you made all these decisions about whether you could be with me or not without me?”

He raises his eyebrows. “I guess I didn’t think of it like that, I just assumed…”
