“Go Fish?”

“How about War? Does he know how to play War?”

“He hasn’t played it yet.”

“Then it’s time he learned.”

Sage was sitting in her dark house listening to the rain and wind outside. She had several candles lit. And she’d started a fire in the woodstove. But now, she wished she’d taken her father’s offer to stay at the main house for the weekend. She was lonely. And a little bit freaked out.

When her cell phone rang, she smiled when she saw it was Sawyer.

“Hey.”

“How’re you doing, Little Sis?”

“I should be asking you that question. How badly are you hurt?”

“Not too bad. Black eye. A couple of bruises. I’ll be good in a day or two.”

She pulled her legs up onto the couch and hugged her knees. “Thank you for calling.”

“I saw the weather report. It looks nasty there. It’s clear here, but it’s supposed to be moving this way.”

“I wish I was with Dad, Ember, and Granddad playing cards by lantern light. Living alone is great, until the lights go out.”

“How much battery life do you have on your laptop?”

Sage smiled as she got up and went to the desk to open her laptop. “Ninety-five percent.”

“Online Scrabble?”

“You’re on.” She went to the Scrabble site and a few moments later, Sawyer’s avatar appeared to challenge her. “Since you’re injured, you can go first. But don’t expect me to take it easy on you.”

“I have a clear head, Sage. And I’m going to whip your butt.”

“We’ll see about that.” She ended the phone call and typed a message to him on the game message board.Thank you.

He played a word worth a lot of points, then replied to her message.Like I said, I’m going to kick your ass.

Chapter twenty-eight

"That's possibly sort of true."

Finn loved playing War and they played four hands before it was time for him to go to bed. It was nine-thirty, which was beyond his bedtime, but they’d been having so much fun, then the time got away from them.

While Joey got Finn ready for bed and added a few more blankets and another pillow, J.T. went upstairs to empty the buckets. The rain had slowed down, and he figured they could now go at least two hours before one or two of them would be in danger of overflowing.

When he returned to the kitchen, Joey was sitting inside of the fort finishing up a story. When she crawled out, she smiled at J.T., who was standing near the table.

“How’s it looking up there?”

“Should be good for a couple of hours now.”

“Okay. I’ll take the next shift. Go get some sleep.”

“Can I say goodnight to him?”

“Of course.”
