“I’m serious. Everything you two said to each other. All the nastiness was coming from hurt kids. You guys aren’t those kids anymore. And I know you’ll never admit this, but you never really got over her.”

J.T. thought about it. “That’s possibly sort of true.”

“You’ve had plenty of opportunities to date, despite the small selection of women in Castle Springs. But you’ve barely gone out. And never more than a couple of times with the same woman.”

“I could say the same thing about you.”

“We’re not talking about me.”

J.T. shook his head. “Okay, fine. I never got over her. But this thing with Finn is a whole other story. It’s a lot to forgive.”

“Of course it is. And I get that. But it seems to me, a lot of forces are working to get you guys back together.”

“Like the Bradford place becoming available and a freak summer storm?”

“Yeah. Throw in a pretty damn cute kid and a flashlight mysteriously not working at a very opportunistic moment.”

“It came back on when we got to the hallway.”

“Noko Esty.”

“You know I don’t believe in that crap.”

“Maybe not. But Dad does. And so does Granddad.”

J.T. thought about the mystique his great grandmother held over his family. “How about you?”

“Even though we never met her, she’s given me some pretty good advice over the years.”

“Bullshit.”

“I’m serious.”

J.T. adjusted his pillow and laid back down. “What has she been telling you lately?”

“That it’s time to make a decision.”

“Please don’t tell me she wants you to go pro.”

“The opposite, actually. She thinks I need to go home.”

J.T. smiled. “Well, I can agree with that.”

“I can’t tell you what to do about Joey. It’s obviously your call. But as an outside observer, I can say neither one of you has moved on. And that’s got to mean something.”

“I wish I knew what the hell it was.”

“You’ll figure it out.”

“Okay. I should get some sleep. I need to get up at one-thirty to dump the rainwater from the buckets upstairs.”

“Sounds like fun.”

“Thanks, man.”

“I’ll always pick up the phone, J.T.”

“Just one more thing. I started thinking about the fort today.”
