“If the power comes on, I’m totally fine. But even if it doesn’t, I don’t want you to worry about me or Finn. You’ve done quite enough, and you were here for the bad part.”

“I guess I should go check on the trailer and run by the ranch and see how they fared. The horses probably aren’t too happy.”

“Poor things. They probably hate the thunder and lightning more than I do.”

“I’m not sure that’s possible.”

She smiled. “I’ll go make breakfast now.”

She left the living room and J.T. stood, then began folding the blankets. He knew it was time to go. But he was a little reluctant to do so. So much for not going there.Geez, just leave already. She’s fine. She doesn’t need you holding her hand anymore. He piled the folded blankets and the pillow on the end of the couch, then went to the bathroom. He used the toilet, then washed his hands and splashed some water on his face.

He looked at himself in the mirror. “She broke your heart, and she kept your son from you for six years. This is not a woman you want to get involved with. No matter how much you’re enjoying her company.”It’ll end badly, then Finn will suffer for it. No Josephina and J.T. That’s over and done with.

He left the bathroom and went into the kitchen. Joey was at the stove making scrambled eggs. She glanced over her shoulder at him. “I don’t have any bacon or sausages. But I have some English muffins. And I can put cheese in the eggs.”

“Cheese sounds great.”

“I put the bread in the warmer. It won’t be toasty, but it’ll be hot.”

J.T. sat at the table which was no longer a fort. “What happened to the fort?”

“Finn decided to build one in our room. At my urging.”

As Joey set a plate down in front of J.T., Sage called him on his cell phone.

“Good morning, Sage. Did you survive the storm?”

“It’s still storming.”

“I heard Sawyer whipped your butt at Scrabble last night.”

“He did not.”

“I’ve got a plate of hot food sitting in front of me. What’s up?”

“Will you have time to help me get the camp ready for the horses on Monday?”

“Probably. It depends on what Dad needs me to do.”

“With camp starting, I don’t want it to be a horseless horse camp any longer than it has to be.”

“I’ll come check it out. It’s supposed to clear tomorrow. So, I’d say we can bring the horses over Tuesday at the latest.”

“Good. Thank you. Also, I don’t suppose you’d like to come on the camp out two weeks from today?”

“You know how I feel about that.”

“I do. But I really need you. The hands will be moving the herd, and I’ll be stuck with a bunch of people who can’t ride.”

“Your counselors can ride.”

“I know. But we have a bigger group going this year.”

J.T. sighed. “I’ll think about it. I need to eat now.”

“Okay. Thank you.”

He ended the call and looked at Joey. “I don’t suppose you’d like to babysit a bunch of beginning riders on a camp out in a couple of weeks.”
