J.T. nodded, then picked up a pair of brown boots. “How about these? They’re pretty close to mine.”
“Yeah.”
Maggie took off his other tennis shoe, then put on the brown boots. “There you go. Walk around and see how they feel.” Finn jumped up and ran down the aisle. Maggie took the opportunity to question J.T. “So, when did this happen?”
“I recently found out.”
“Who’s his mother?”
J.T. sighed. She’d find out sooner or later. “Joey Pierson.”
Maggie’s mouth dropped open. “Oh my gosh. I heard she was back in town.”
“Yep. She’s back.”
Maggie shook her head. “And you didn’t—”
She stopped when Finn ran back to them. “These are the best.”
J.T. laughed. “Are you sure?”
Finn nodded and Maggie knelt and felt for room in the toes of the boots. “They seem to fit fine.”
J.T. nodded. “Are those the ones you want?”
“Yes. They’re just like yours.”
J.T. looked at his dusty and worn boots. “They will be soon enough, I guess.” He looked at Maggie. “We’re going to need a hat, too.”
She went to a table with children’s cowboy hats. “Color?” She looked at J.T.’s black hat. “Black?”
“Probably, yeah.”
She took a black hat and handed it to J.T. “I’ll let you do the honors.”
J.T. put the hat on Finn’s head and adjusted it. “That looks great, buddy.”
Finn ran to a mirror to check himself out.
Maggie watched him. “He’s adorable.”
“Yeah. He is. He’s going to have his first riding lesson today.”
“How fun.” She looked at him. “I don’t suppose you’re going to give me any more details.”
“Nope.”
Finn came back and took J.T.’s hand. “Can we go ride now?”
“Yes, we can.” He took out his wallet and handed Maggie a card. “Thanks for your help.”
She processed his card and handed him a receipt. “Have fun.”
They left the store and returned to the truck. “Okay, kid. You’re ready now.”
They drove to the ranch and went into the barn to saddle a horse for Finn. J.T. had an older mare picked out that would give him a safe ride. He went to Oakly’s stall and opened it.
“This is Oakly.”
