“Back girl.”
Oakly didn’t move and Sawyer scowled at her. “Back up, Oakly.”
The horse took one step back, which was enough to thrill Finn.
Jake nudged J.T. “I think Finn is going to outgrow Oakly really fast.”
“I think you’re right.”
“The Westons are selling their daughter’s Welsh pony. It’s a beautiful horse and has been trained in some equestrian events.”
“That’s too much horse for him now.”
“Yeah. But not for long. The horse is only five. It’d last him for a while.”
“I’ll give them a call.”
Sawyer led Oakly to the gate. “Okay, Grandpa. Your turn.”
Jake smiled. “Alright.”
J.T. looked at him. “Don’t you do anything crazy either.”
“Hey, I taught the both of you to ride. And your sister. And you were all a lot younger than Finn.” He went through the gate and took the lead from Sawyer. “Are you ready to trot again?”
Finn nodded, then tightened his grip on the saddle horn.
While Jake was making his second trot around the pen, Joey arrived and came up beside J.T. and Sawyer.
“Look at them go.”
“Yeah. The old man’s in pretty good shape.” Joey smiled and J.T. shook his head. “Right.”
Jake spotted her and slowed down to a walk, then led the horse to the fence in front of them.
Joey shook her head. “That can’t be Finn on the back of that horse. That’s a decked out cowboy.”
“It’s me, Mom.” He took off his hat and smiled at her.
“Oh my goodness. It is you. Where did you get that hat and those boots?”
“Dad bought them for me.”
Joey looked at J.T. “He did, huh? Well, that was very nice of him.”
“I know. I have boots and a hat just like his.”
J.T. glanced at Joey. “He picked them out. I didn’t try to influence him in any way.”
“I’m sure you didn’t.”
“Did you see how fast I was going?”
“Super-fast. Thanks, grandpa, for running around the pen with him.”
Jake was slightly winded. “No problem.”
They stayed another hour in the pen taking turns leading Finn around. Joey finally decided he’d had enough, and told him it was time to call it for the day.
