Sage smiled at him. “Mr. Kluck’s? I take it back. You’re not a jerk.”

J.T. looked at the walls. “Pink?”

Joey scowled. “It’s not pink. It’s dusty mauve.”

“Right. How uncivilized of me not to know that.”

She took the two bags of food from him. “Let’s eat downstairs away from the paint smell.”

“You should open a window.”

Joey glanced toward the window J.T. closed the day he discovered her and Mandy there. “It seems to be stuck.”

He grinned. “Let me see if I can get it open.” He went to the window and tried to slide it open. It didn’t want to budge. He glanced back at the women. “Hmm. Seems to be stuck.” He triedagain, and the window finally moved a few inches. He forced it up a few more inches, then smiled at Joey. “J.T. two, window zip.”

Sage fanned herself. “Oh, my gosh. What a magnificent show of manliness.”

J.T. flexed his biceps. “Damn right.”

She laughed. “You know, Sawyer would’ve just lifted it right up.”

“Shut up.” He went to Finn. “Are you ready for some chicken strips?”

“Yeah.”

“Let’s go.”

They ate lunch in the kitchen, then Joey and J.T. left Finn with Sage and went to go look at the Welsh pony. Thirty minutes later, they were watching Darby ride Gilley around the arena at the Weston’s ranch.

J.T. was leaning on the fence, watching with great interest. It was a beautiful horse and the fourteen-year-old girl was a talented rider.

Joey nudged him. “Wow. She’s really good.”

“Yeah. The horse is really good, too.”

She glanced at George Weston, who was watching them watch his daughter. “I suppose he wants top dollar.”

“Yeah. It’s a little steep. But well worth it. This horse will work for Finn until he’s Darby’s age.”

“So, are you going to buy him?”

“After I do some negotiating.” He winked at Joey, then left the fence and approached George.

George smiled. “What do you think? Quite a horse, right?”

J.T. nodded. “Not bad. My son’s only five, though. I’m a little worried the horse will be too much for him.”

“My daughter started riding Gilley three years ago when he was a two-year-old. She was pretty novice at that point. Gilley is very well trained and doesn’t have any bad habits or wildness. With you teaching your son to ride, he’ll be just fine in a few months.”

J.T. rubbed his chin. “Maybe. I’ve never really gone for the fancy riding. I mainly need a good trail horse.”

“Gilley is great on the trail. And thefancy ridingjust means he’s well trained.”

J.T. watched the horse for a few moments, then turned back to George. “I’ve got another couple of horses to look at. But I’ll keep Gilley in mind.”

He shook George’s hand, then walked toward Joey. He took her arm, and she looked at him.

“So…”
