She shook her head. “I’m going to owe you so many kisses.”

“Anytime. The bank of J.T. is always open for deposits.”

Finn ran into the room. “Mom, I’m hungry.”

“Finn. You just had dinner.”

He scowled. “Still.”

She looked at J.T. “I can’t keep this child full.”

“He’s a growing boy. Do you have some eggs?”

“Yes.”

J.T. got to his feet. “I make the world’s best French toast. We can use the bread I just brought.”

Finn clapped his hands. “I love French toast.”

“Do you want to help me make it?” Finn ran around the kitchen yelling, “Yay!”

“I take it that’s a yes.”

Joey laughed. “I think that’s a hell yes.”

“Do you want some?”

“Well, I can hardly turn down the world’s best French toast.” She stood and went to him. “Made by the world’s best man.”

J.T. shook his head. “Not the world’s best. Maybe the best in Montana. Or possibly the western United States.” He went to the refrigerator and took out a carton of eggs and some milk. “I also need some cinnamon and some vanilla.”

“Above the stove.” She sat back down. “I’m going to sit here and have another glass of wine while I watch you two men cook.”

“Watch and learn. After you’ve had my French toast, you’ll never want it any other way.”

Chapter thirty-five

"These men have way too much power over us."

Despite J.T.’s reluctance to go on the camp out, he arrived early to the camp to help Sage saddle the horses, and make sure everyone was set up with an appropriate horse for their level of riding skill. The camper’s gear would all be trucked to the campsite using an infrequently traveled dirt road. One of the parents, who wanted to attend, but wasn’t a good rider, would drive the truck and set things up along with the camp cook. They’d get there two hours before the rest of the group on horses. With most of the riders being novices, the ride would take about three hours.

About two hours in, J.T. spotted Xander riding behind his kids, and he caught up to him.

Xander glanced at him. “How you doing?”

“Not bad. I kind of got talked into this. But so far, I’m enjoying the ride.”

“Not really the “Kum Ba Yah” around the campfire sort?”

“No. Not at all. I don’t mind the campfire part. It’s the sitting around it with a bunch of strangers I have a problem with.”

“It seems you know most of these strangers.”

J.T. smiled. “I guess that’s true enough.”

Xander was quiet for a few minutes while they navigated a small creek. “You don’t need to worry about me.”

“I’m not. You seem more than capable on a horse.”
