“Try it.”

J.T. took a bite while Sage and Sawyer watched him for a reaction. He chewed, took a moment to savor the flavor, then smiled. “Best damn bear claw I’ve ever had.”

Sawyer laughed and took one for himself. “Better than Betty’s?”

“Yeah. I don’t know how he did it. But that guy out bear clawed Betty.”

Sage smiled as she took a pastry for herself. “Xander seems to know what he’s doing.”

J.T. pointed at her. “Don’t go getting any ideas about a guy who’s only here temporarily.”

“I have no ideas about Xander. But he told me the other day, he’s not going anywhere. He bought the bakery from Betty.”

Sawyer squinted at her. “You still don’t know anything about him.”

Sage shook her head. “I don’t care about Xander. Geez. Big brother times two. I’m perfectly happy being single.”

Sawyer nodded. “Yeah. We all are.”

They all looked at each other and started laughing. J.T. shook his head. “We are a sorry lot. The O’Connell siblings can’t get a date to save their lives.”

Sawyer reached for another bear claw. “Who needs a significant other? We’ve got our priorities right now.” He pointed at J.T. “You’ve got a ranch to help run. Little Sis has a music career to build. And I need to decide if I want to go pro or not.”

J.T. and Sage both looked at him. And J.T. leaned forward in his seat. “Are you at that point?”

Sawyer nodded. “Yeah. I am. My manager has been bugging me to make a decision.”

Sage took a sip of her coffee. “And have you?”

He shook his head. “No. And I don’t want to talk about it. It’s our big brother’s birthday. Today is all about him. Right after we go work on the fence line on the new property.”

J.T. took his second bear claw. “Shit. Do we have to do that today?”

“Yes. Because tonight you and I are going out. And we probably won’t feel like doing it tomorrow.”

Sage wrinkled her forehead. “Where are you going?”

“Well, since this is Castle Springs, there aren’t a lot of choices.”

“The Corner Bar?”

“Yeah. Why?” He looked at her. “Are you feeling left out?”

“Yes. Can I come? You just said yourself there is no significant other material in town. So you’re not going out to pick up women.”

Sawyer looked at J.T., who shrugged. “Fine by me.”

Sage squealed. “Woohoo! I just became a member of the boys club.”

Sawyer pointed at her. “This is a trial run. You need to prove you’re worthy of joining the boys club.”

“I will be on my best behavior.”

J.T. laughed. “I think you’re missing the point of going out with the boys.”

She smiled. “Right. Got it. So drink a lot. Swear a lot. And act like I’m cool?”

“Now you have it. But you’re going to have to be really cool to out cool us.”
