He lifted his head and looked at her. “What did Sawyer tell you?”

“Nothing.”

“Then it was Sage.”

Ember smiled. “She did mention something about your ex-girlfriend being at the bar last night.”

“Of course she did.”

“Joey must’ve meant a lot to you.”

J.T. laid his head back again. “It was a long time ago. And I’m over it.” He lifted his head again and looked at her. “I mean it.”

“Okay.”

He straightened up on the couch and studied the glass in his hand. Then he looked at Ember. “I thought I was over it. Now, seeing her again, I don’t know.”

“You were in love with her.”

“Yeah. Do you think an eighteen-year-old kid can be in love?”

“Yes, I do. Look at your mom and dad. They were high school sweethearts, right?”

“Yeah. Why did she have to come back?”

Ember stood. “I’m going to make you some coffee. Are you hungry?”

“No.”

“Okay.” She went into the kitchen area. “Not even for one of these bear claws?”

“No. Maybe later, when your magic potion kicks in.” He watched her start a pot of coffee. “Did Dad stay up until Sawyer got home last night?”

She laughed. “Yes he did.”

“Shit. I knew it.”

“Your father loves you.”

“Yeah, yeah.”

She returned to the chair while the coffee was brewing. “We’ve never really talked much about this, but it must’ve been devastating not knowing where your father was for five months.”

“It was. But it must’ve been worse for him. Not knowing who he was. I can’t even imagine.”

She was quiet for a moment. “Did you think… Did you assume you’d lost him?”

“We tried not to go there. But of course, it seemed like a possibility. But Aunt Genny. She thinks she’s connected to him since they’re twins and all. She assured us he was out there somewhere. I don’t know if she actually believed it. But she needed to believe it and make us believe it.”

“So you don’t believe in the twin connection?”

“With Sage and Sawyer, I definitely do. Those guys are like freakishly zoned in. But Dad and Aunt Genny, not so much.”

“Hmm.”

He smiled at her. “You think they are?”

“I think they’re more connected than your father wants to admit.”
