“It might not be so bad. You’ve both grown up since then. Or hopefully you have.”
“Trust me. It’s going to be bad. Her sister’s with her, too.”
“Mandy? Nowshewas kind of a bitch.”
“I’m pretty sure she still is.”
Chapter two
"I think there's a statute of limitations on wish protocal."
Jake set his fork down. “Joey Pierson bought the Bradford property?”
J.T. nodded. “Yep. I don’t know where she got the money.”
“And you and her…”
“Yeah. No way in hell will she sell to us.”
Jake patted Ember’s hand. “J.T. and Joey were a couple a few years back.”
Sawyer laughed. “And then they weren’t.” He clapped his hands together and made the sound of an explosion.
J.T. sighed. “Can we just say it didn’t end up well and leave it at that?”
“Sure. And earthquakes, hurricanes, and tornadoes don’t end up well either.”
J.T. kicked Sawyer under the table.
Ember smiled at J.T. “Who knows? Maybe you guys will come to an understanding.”
Jake kissed her on the temple. “Never going to happen.”
Sage helped herself to another half serving of stew. “I always liked Joey. I thought she was cool.”
J.T. ripped off a piece of his roll and threw it across the table at her.
Jacob raised a hand. “We’ve been resigned to working around not having that five hundred acres. Nothing’s changed.”
Sawyer grinned at J.T. “Except my brother has a new neighbor.”
Jake and Ember were walking hand-in-hand down the path toward the pond. There was just enough light from the sinking sun to see by.
“So, what’s the story with J.T. and Joey?”
“Josephina Pierson. Her father owns the White Buffalo.”
“The bar?”
“Yeah. His wife left him seven years ago and after Joey graduated, she left Castle Springs, her father, and J.T. to go live with her mother and go to school.”
“She broke J.T.’s heart?”
“I’m not sure what went down. But it was ugly. That’s all I know. And it took him a while to get over her.”
“And now she’s back.”
