He walked to his truck and got in, then backed out of the driveway onto the road. He gave her a small wave, then drove away. He drove straight to the ranch, then took the road to his great-grandparents’ house.

Sage opened the door when he knocked on it. She took his arm and pulled him inside, then hugged him.

“What happened?”

He stepped away from her and went to sit on a chair.

“Do you want some coffee? Or a beer?”

“Yeah. A beer would be great.”

Sage went to get him a beer, then came back and handed it to him before sitting on the couch. “Tell me everything.”

“I just left Joey. She confirmed what we all knew. Finn is my son.”

Sage gasped and put a hand to her mouth. “Why didn’t she tell you?”

“Apparently, she wrote me a letter when he was born. A letter that her father took it upon himself to not send.”

“Oh my gosh.” She looked at him for a moment. “You believe her?”

“Yeah. I do. Because I know her father. And it’s a typical Freddy Pierson move.”

“She tried to tell you and thought you didn’t care?”

“Well, the thing about that is, she knew me better than that. She knew, despite the way we left things, a child was a whole other thing. So, she doesn’t get off the hook that easily. She should’ve followed up. She also should’ve considered the fact her father couldn’t be trusted to send the letter to me. This is still on her.”

Sage nodded. “So, what happens now?”

“Now, I’m going to get to know my son. And introduce him to his family.”

She gave him a small smile. “Good. You and Joey need to figure out how to get along for his sake.”

“Right. And I’m willing to do that.”

“I know you are.”

He took a sip of beer. “She dropped another bit of a bombshell on me.”

“What’s that?”

“She’s turning the Bradford place into a B and B.”

“Huh. I know you probably hate that. But it’s not a bad idea.”

He sighed. “I know. I just wish Freddy wasn’t behind it. He’s buying the place and footing the bill for the renovations. She’s dependent on him until she gets the place open.”

“Well, then we need to make sure she gets it open as soon as possible.”

“I figure with a couple of O’Connells helping her, it could get done pretty quickly.”

Sage smiled. “You know I love to paint.”

“I do know that.”

“When do we get started?”
