“Thank you. That’d be nice.”

He was quiet for a moment. “I want to tell him soon, Joey. The longer we drag it out, the weirder it’s going to be.”

She took a breath. “You’re right. Will you let me tell him?”

“Sure. Just don’t take too long to do it.”

“I won’t. I promise.”

He smiled at her. “So, you have a crush on my dad, huh?”

She scowled. “Shut up. I do not.”

“Ember might have a problem with that.”

“I said stop. That’s not what I said.”

“Are you sure you can handle sitting at the same table with him?”

She put her hands on her hips. “Stop, or I’ll take my son and go home.”

“Our son.”

She dropped her hands to her sides and nodded. “Our son.”

J.T. shook his head. “Six years, Josephina. You kept him from me for six years.”

“Mom?” She turned to see Finn standing in the kitchen doorway. “Time to eat.”

“We’re coming, honey.” She looked at J.T. “What do you want me to say, J.T.?”

He looked at her for a moment. “I want you to tell him I’m his father. I don’t want to lose any more time with him.”

“Okay. I’ll talk to him tonight.”

Chapter twenty

"We're a pretty likable bunch."

After dinner, J.T. and Finn helped Ember with the dishes, while Jake asked Joey to join him on the front porch. He was sitting on one of the chairs when she came out of the house with a cup of coffee for him. She handed it to him, then sat on a nearby chair.

He took a sip. “Thanks for bringing Finn over for dinner. It was very nice getting to know him. He’s quite the character.”

She nodded. “Thank you for inviting us. I know you must have some thoughts about me keeping Finn from J.T. all these years.”

Jake gave her a small smile. “I do. I have a lot of them. But I’m not a man to hold a grudge. Mostly, because it really doesn’t solve anything. And I think going forward, for Finn’s sake, holding onto any animosity or pent up anger and hurt feelings would only be detrimental. I can’t speak for J.T. He’s obviouslythe one most hurt by this. But as for the rest of us, we just want to move on from here and be a family.”

Jake watched as she fought back some tears. “Thank you. I appreciate that. And of course it’s the best thing for Finn. He already likes you all so much.”

“Well, we’re a pretty likable bunch.”

She smiled. “Yes, you are.”

“I will ask you one thing, though. Don’t hurt my son again. It took him a while to get over you leaving.”

Joey shook her head. “I won’t. I promise. I’m not going anywhere. Castle Springs is Finn’s home now. And I will do my best to make things up to J.T.”

“When do you plan on telling Finn the truth?”
