“They stayed overnight? We’ve always done it in one day.”

Sawyer grinned. “I believe they have a favorite motel there.”

“Shit. Of course they do.”

“Sucks when your dad is getting more action than you are, doesn’t it?”

“Shut up. And speak for yourself.”

“Right. I forgot you have that secret girlfriend. Or is it a couple of them?”

J.T. grabbed a bale and hauled it to the hay shed at the end of the barn. When he returned, he looked up at Sawyer on the trailer. “As you well know, there aren’t a lot of women in Castle Springs.”

“Well, apparently the female population recently went up by two.”

J.T. shook his head. “Been there. Done that. No thank you.”

Sage came up to them and put her hands on her hips. “Working hard, I see.”

Sawyer looked at her. “Do you want to come up here and throw some bales? Show us how it’s done?”

She smiled. “Sorry. I totally would. But I have a job to do.”

J.T. looked at her. “And what might that be?”

“I’ve got to run some antibiotics out to the herd.”

“Do we have sick cows?”

“Apparently, one of them got tangled in some barbed wire and cut her legs up. So it’s a preventative measure.”

“Sawyer or I could run it out. It’s a bit of a ride.”

“You two have your hands full. I can handle the ride. It’s not like I’ve never been to the lower pasture before. Besides, Ray is going to meet me at Round Hill. I’m not going all the way out.”

“Okay. So you’ll be back before dinner?”

“I’ll be back in time to help Granddad with the cooking.” She headed for the barn to saddle her horse. “Now get back to work. Or you’ll be late for dinner.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

J.T. and Sawyer worked a while longer, then took a lunch break before they finished unloading the hay. By the time they were done, it was after four.

They sat side by side on the end of the trailer with two beers. J.T. took a drink from his bottle.

“Next time, let’s plan this for when the guys aren’t all out with the herd.”

Sawyer tapped his bottle to J.T.’s. “Good call.”

When they saw Jake’s truck turn onto the drive from the road, they both slid off the trailer.

Sawyer nudged J.T. “Time to make ourselves scarce, or we’ll be hauling groceries inside.”

They headed for the barn, then went up the stairs to the loft. They both showered and changed their clothes, then had another beer before heading to the house for dinner.

When they went into the kitchen through the mud room, Jacob was carving a beef roast. The potatoes, gravy, green beans, and bread were already on the table.

Sawyer sniffed the air. “Oh my God, I’m so hungry.”
