“She sounds like a very wise woman.”

“I’m pretty sure I remembered her first last summer for a reason. She was trying to get my attention and lead me back here to the ranch.”

“Well, I guess it worked. You’re back home where you belong.”

“Yes, I am. Beginning my second life with you.”

“And baby O’Connell.”

“Hell, yeah.”

As they approached the pond, they spotted J.T., Sawyer, and Sage on the other side of it. They met on the path and Sage hugged Jake.

“We’re going to say hi to Mom.”

Jake nodded. “Good. We’ll see you at dinner. Dad’s making goulash.”

“Mom’s favorite.”

They continued on while Jake and Ember circled the pond and headed for the house.

Jake glanced over his shoulder. “They turned out pretty good, didn’t they?”

“They sure did.”

“I’ve always worried about Sage going through her teen years in a houseful of men. Thank goodness she had Genny.”

“Sage is fine. Growing up with all of you men just made her a little tougher. Of course, she’s going to find it hard to find a man who can hold a candle to the four of you.”

Jake laughed. “Hmm. She might argue that point.”

“I don’t think so.”

“I thought she’d come home with a college boyfriend. But she never did.”

“She’s waiting for her Mr. Right.”

“Compassionate, respectful, loyal, heart-stoppingly good looking?”

“Yes.” Ember tucked her arm through Jake's. “I found mine. I’m sure she’ll find hers.”

“In Castle Springs?”

“You never know.”

Chapter twenty-three

"Loving horses is pretty much required."

J.T. had Shadow and Pablo saddled and tied to a rail outside of the barn. Joey was late, and he hoped she hadn’t decided not to show up for their trail ride. He was pretty sure Finn would be disappointed if she did.

As he was about to go back to the house for another cup of coffee, he saw her car coming down the driveway. He walked toward the house and met her as she drove up and parked.

She opened her door. “Sorry I’m late. I couldn’t find my boots.” She got out and opened the back door to release Finn from his car seat. When he was free, he ran to J.T. and hugged his legs.

J.T. patted his back. “Are you ready to ride a horse?”

Finn clapped his hands. “Yes. Can we go now?”
