“I can feel it. What if he gets really hurt one of these times? What if he gets one too many concussions? I hate this.”

“Yeah. I know.”

“Why can’t he stay here on the ranch and chase cows around with you?”

“You make it sound so exciting.”

“It’s better than getting punched in the face every couple of months. He has such a nice face.” She pointed at J.T. “Don’t tell him I said that.”

He smiled. “What do you think about my face?”

“It’s very nice, too. You look like young Granddad.” She checked the time. “Fifteen minutes. This is bad. It should be over.” She picked up her phone. “Why hasn’t he called me?” As she set it back down, J.T.’s phone went off.

He looked at it, and showed her it was Sawyer, then answered it. “Hey. Are you good?”

“Yeah. It went the full three rounds. And I knew Sage would be freaking out.”

“She is.”

“Are you with her?”

J.T. leaned back in his seat. “Of course.”

“Tell her I’m fine.”

J.T. glanced at Sage. “Are you really?”

He was quiet for a moment. “I will be.”

“Okay. Go take care of yourself.”

“You didn’t ask me if I won.”

J.T. smiled. “I figured you’d be pissed off if you lost. And you don’t sound pissed off.”

“Tell Sage she can relax now.”

He looked at Sage again. “Do you want to talk to her?”

“No. She’ll be able to tell I’m not one hundred percent.”

J.T. nodded. “Okay. Take care, man.”

“I will. Good luck with the storm. I’ll be home on Tuesday.”

“Okay. Bye.” J.T. ended the call and Sage Scowled at him.

“I wanted to talk to him.”

“He says to tell you he’s fine.”

She put her hands on her hips. “Which is Sawyer, for he’s not fine.”

J.T. shrugged. “He won and he’ll be home on Tuesday.”

“How hurt is he?”

“He didn’t say. But he sounded fine.”
