“We’d been dating for a year and a half. So it wouldn’t have been that mortifying.”

“It is if you’re a seventeen-year-old boy.”

She thought about it for a moment. “We did pretty good, considering we were both new at it.”

“I suppose we did. But it got better.”

“It definitely did.”

J.T. cleared his throat. “We should spread these around a little.”

“Yeah. Let’s do that. I’ve got some oil lamps in the pantry. But I was afraid to use them.”

“We’ll check those out next.”

They each took two candles and went to the living room. After setting them down, a bolt of lightning lit up the room, followed by a loud clap of thunder. Joey ran to J.T. and buried her face in his chest.

He patted her back. “You’re fine, Josephina. I’ve got you.”

She looked up at him. “I’m sorry I’m such a baby.”

He put a hand on her cheek. “It’s fine. Kind of cute, actually.”

She stepped away from him. “Cute?”

“Yeah.”

She folded her arms across her chest. “So you’re here to be entertained?”

“No. I’m here to hold your hand until the storm is over.”

She dropped her hands to her side. “You’ll stay until it’s over?”

“If you want me too, yes.”

She moved closer and hugged him. “Thank you.”

He kissed the top of her head. “Let’s go check out those oil lamps.”

Chapter twenty-seven

"It's pretty damn strange, though."

J.T. got the two gas lamps going, and they put one in the parlor and brought one into the living room. Finn insisted they leave the kitchen dark for his fort. He’d hauled in several more toys, a blanket, and a pillow.

As they left the dark kitchen, J.T. smiled. “I hope you bought lots of batteries.”

“I did. I knew he’d be fascinated by the flashlight if the lights went out. He’ll probably insist on sleeping under there.”

J.T. looked at the woodstove. “Would you like me to build a fire?”

“A fire in June. I thought my fire adventure last month would be it until fall.”

“The chimneys are good, right?”

“Yes. All clear and ready to go. No dead racoons in any of them.”

He laughed. “Good to know. It’s a little chilly. And it’ll help dry the air out. And maybe my boots.”
