Sawyer stood. “Okay. You just need your coat.”

As he went to get the coat, Jake shivered. “I’m going to need one of these blankets, too. I can’t seem to get warm.”

Sawyer wrapped a blanket around Jake’s shoulders as he fought the urge to lie down. He closed his eyes against the spinning room.

J.T. returned a few minutes later. “I ditched the trailer and moved the truck as close as I could to the building. It’s currently not raining, so that’s a minor blessing.”

He and Sawyer helped Jake to the truck, putting him in the middle. J.T. got behind the wheel and Sawyer sat in the passenger seat. It was a cozy fit, but Jake was thankful for it. He was still freezing.

Once they got going, J.T. turned up the heater. “Just hang in there, Dad. It’s going to take about an hour on this road and with the low clouds, it’s like we’re driving in fog.”

“I’m fine. Take it slow. We don’t want to go off the road.” Talking made him cough and he covered his mouth with the blanket as he tried to get it under control.

Sawyer patted his knee. “No more talking, Dad.”

Jake nodded.No argument here.

The time went pretty fast for Jake as he seemed to slip in and out of a semi-consciousstate. When he felt the truck slow and then stop, he looked up, expecting to see the welcome sight of the house. But it wasn’t his house. It was his grandparents’ house.

“Why are you stopping?” It came out as a whisper.

Sawyer patted his leg again. “We’re going to get Ember.”

“Don’t wake her. I’m…” He started coughing again.

“No, you’re not.” He got out of the truck and headed for the front door.

Sawyer thought about knocking. But it was one in the morning. He didn’t want to scare her. He took out his cell and called her phone. Just as he was about to give up and try knocking, she answered.

“Hello?”

“Hey. It’s Sawyer. Sorry to wake you.”

“What’s wrong? Is it Jacob?”

“No. It’s Dad, actually. He’s pretty damn sick.”

“Where are you?”

“On your front porch.”

The phone clicked off and a moment later, Ember opened the door, wrapped in a blanket. “Where is he?”

“He’s in the truck. We drove back from the camp. Can you come to the house?”

She moved past Sawyer and went to the truckto open the door.

“Jake. Oh my gosh.” She touched his hand. “You’re on fire.”

He nodded. “Not feeling so great.” He coughed into the blanket again.

“I’ll be right behind you.” She turned to Sawyer, who had followed her off the porch. “I just need to get dressed. Get him in the house and into bed.”

“Yes, ma’am.”
