“We’ll be lucky to reach forty-five. But this is mild for November. We usually have our first snow by now.”

“I’m looking forward to that.”

“I’m pretty sure that old Toyota of yours won’t fare so well in a couple inches of snow. We’ll have to get you set up in one of the four-by-fours.”

“Thank you. That’s nice. And thoughtful.”

“Got to keep our nurse safe and on the job.”

When Lucy pulled up, Jake stood and went to help her. She always came loaded down with food.

“Jake, what are you doing outside?”

“I’m fine, Lucy. Besides, I have my nurse with me.”

Ember came up beside him. “A little fresh air is good for him.”

Lucy handed Jake a glass baking dish with tin foil over it. Then she set two pies on top of it. “I got some more of those berries from Brady.”

“Yum.”

She waved at Jake. “Go on now. I don’t want to overtax you. Ember and I can get the rest.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

He took the food inside to the kitchen and Genny took it out of his hands. “I told her she didn’t need to bring anything.”

“Gen, you tell her that every year.”

Genny smiled. “I am looking forward to a slice of this pie.”

The glass pan had a green bean casserole in it. And Lucy and Ember came in with a basket of cheese biscuits, and another glass pan with yams cooked in brown sugar and topped with tiny marshmallows. Lucy set them on the stove to stay warm.

Ember was holding the biscuits, and Jake took one from the basket.

Lucy frowned at him. “Young man. You need to wait until dinner, just like everyone else.”

Jake took a bite of the biscuit. “Payment for hauling in the casserole and the pies.”

Sage took one too. “I love your biscuits, Lucy.”

Jake smiled at Ember, then ripped his biscuit in half. “You’ve got to try this.”

Ember took it from him and tried a bite. “Oh my gosh.”

“Right?” She left a crumb on the side of her mouth and he brushed it away, then thought,What the hell am I doing? He took a step back from her. “Sorry about that.”

She smiled. “It’s okay.” She held his gaze for a moment, then looked away.

Jake took a breath and went to therefrigerator. It was time for a beer. “Does anyone else want a beer? Or we can open this bottle of wine.”

Jacob raised his hand. “I want a damn beer.” He looked at Ember. “You’re not going to deny me a beer on Thanksgiving, are you?”

Ember shook her head. “No. You can even have two.”

Genny came up beside Jake and peered over his shoulder. “Will you open the Chablis, please?”

“Sure.”
