Jake smiled. “What’s up, Dad?”

“They think I’m damn useless.”

“I don’t think that’s true. You just raised a damn independent daughter. And Lucy. Well, Lucy is Lucy.”

Lucy grinned. “Damn right.”

Jake called out. “J.T. Where are you guys at?”

They heard a holler not too far off, then the five of them headed in that direction. They found the others staring up at a beautiful tree.

Sawyer smiled. “What do you think?”

Jake circled the tree. “It’s a beauty. Will she fit in the house?”

Jacob looked at the tree. “It’s about a foot above your head, which puts it over seven feet. But the ceiling is seven and a half. It should just fit. Especially if we take a few inches off the trunk.”

“Okay. This is the one, then.”

Everyone moved away from the tree and Sawyer started sawing through the eight-inch trunk. When the tree fell over with a whoosh and a puff of snow, everyone cheered.

Jake looked at J.T. “Did you find one for your loft?”

J.T. picked up a four-foot tree. “Right here.”

Jake took it from him. “I’ll take this one. You help your brother with the monster tree.”

It took longer to get to the ranch with the horses pulling five trees, but they got back early afternoon, and Sawyer and J.T. loaded Lucy and Genny’s trees in their respective vehicles.

Genny hugged everyone. “I need to go check on my birds. But don’t you go decorating the tree without me.”

Jake laughed. “We wouldn’t dare.”

“I’ll bring some bread and dessert to go with Dad’s stew.” She kissed him on the cheek, then got into her SUV with the tree in the back and waved to the rest of the family. “I’ll see you all soon.”

Jake went to stand by Ember, who was watching Jacob and Lucy at her truck. “They’re so cute.”

He laughed. “It’s a love hate relationship for sure.”

“Seems like more love than hate.”

He put his arm around her. “You are a romantic. You see love everywhere.”

Sage came up to them. “If you need some decorations for your tree. We always have a ton leftover.”

Ember smiled at her. “Thank you.”

Jake looked at J.T. and Sawyer. “You boys haul the tree into the house and get it set up. I’m going to help Ember get her tree into the house.”

Sawyer waved and J.T. said, “Yes, sir.”

Jake looked at Sage. “You help Granddad with dinner. Without him knowing you’re helping, of course.”

“I’ve got that down pretty good.”

He took Ember’s hand and they headed for the truck where her tree had been loaded. “Let’s go put up your Christmas tree.”
