“I’m going to back the van up as close as I can to the doors. Can you guide me in?”

She nodded. She was trying to stay under the small roof over the entrance to the building. She hadn’t done her hair yet, but she didn’t want it to get wet.

Xander got into the van and began backing it up. She moved where he could see her in the rearview mirror, which took her out from under the protection of the roof. She got him within a foot of the supports for the roof, then stopped him.

He got out and went to join her at the rear of the truck. “Good job.”

“I’ve been guiding trucks back to horse trailers all my life.”

“Right. Ranch girl.” He opened the rear of the van and slid the cake toward the end of the doors. “Okay, this thing is damn heavy, so open the door and get out of my way.”

“Okay. Please don’t drop it.”

He didn’t respond as he lifted the cake with a grunt. Sage opened the doors, then walked over to the table set up for the cake. “Right here.”

He set it down, then walked around it to make sure it was still in perfect condition. He smiled. “My brother once dropped a cake five hours before a wedding. Somehow we got another one made and the bride never knew.”

“So you work with your brother when you’re not covering for your aunt?”

He lost his smile. “No. Not anymore.” He looked at the cake one more time. “I think it looks good.”

“It’s a beautiful cake. Thank you again. And thanks for delivering it.”

“No problem.” He looked at her jeans and flannel shirt. “Is that what you’re wearing to the wedding?”

“No. I’m going to get ready now. I just wanted to make sure the cake got here safely.”

He looked at the caterers setting up. “You didn’t trust the caterers?”

She smiled. “Thank you, again.” She took a step back. “I’ll see you around town, I guess. At least until your aunt gets back.”

“Actually, you’ll see me at the wedding.”

“You’re coming to my father’s wedding?”

“Yes. He invited me. I remember him from when I used to come spend summers here with my aunt. I remember your grandfather, too. They were both always nice to me.

“Huh. Okay, then I guess I’ll see you at the wedding.”

He nodded. “You’ve changed your attitude.”

“What are you talking about?”

“About the wedding. Overnight.”

“There was nothing to change.”

“Right. Okay. I’ll ah…see you in a bit.”

Sage watched him disappear through thedoor. “Annoying man.”

Jake was staring at his reflection in the mirror. He was dressed in a black suit with a light blue shirt and a medium blue tie. J.T. came up beside him and adjusted his own blue tie, then tucked it into the black vest he was wearing.

He glanced at Jake. “Are you okay, Dad?”

Jake took a breath, then turned away from the mirror. “I was just wondering how I managed to get two incredible women to fall in love with me.”

J.T. put a hand on his shoulder. “It’s the eyes, Dad. No woman in her right mind can resist those eyes.”
