She glanced at him, then drove to the side of the road. She looked at him, then looked at her lap.

“What’s going on?”

“Nothing. I’m really happy for you.”

“But…?”

“I’m sorry. I’m a horrible person.”

“Why?”

She wiped at a tear from the corner of her eye. “Um…I feel like you’re leaving the nest.”

He smiled, then put a hand on her cheek. “Ember. You are and always will be my guardian angel. I wouldn’t be here right now if it wasn’t for you and your generous and loving heart. I owe everything to you. And just because I got myself a job, it doesn’t mean I don’t still need you. Who’sgoing to cook dinner and help with the dishes? Who will I beat at Rummy?”

“You didn’t beat me.”

“How do you figure that?”

“You just happened to be ahead right now. It’s an ongoing Rummy tournament.”

“Oh. That’s news to me. But I’ll gladly beat you again tonight.”

She took his hand in hers and kissed it. “I’m sorry. I’ve just gotten used to having you around.”

“I’m not going anywhere. Now, trade seats with me.”

“What?”

“You have better things to do than chauffeur me back and forth to Everett’s. I’m going to drive home.”

“You remember how?”

“I guess we’ll find out. Can’t be that different from steering a horse.”

“John. It’s a lot different than steering a horse.”

“Just switch seats with me. We’re a mile from home. How much trouble can I get into?”

He got behind the wheel and drove perfectly back to the house. When he parked in front of it, he turned and grinned at Ember. “Nothing to it.”

“Impressive.”

“Well, I’ve probably been driving longer than you’ve been alive.”

“No way.”

“If I’m in my forties and I started driving when I was fifteen…”

“Fine. I can do the math.”

“I’m damn near middle-aged.”

“Not to me you’re not.”

“Ember.”

“What?”
