“Because it’s bound to end and I want to go out on top.”

“Okay.” He stood and stretched. “Want to go to the porch for a minute?”

“Yes. Let me get a jacket.”

“I’ll meet you out there.”

John went out to the porch and looked at the stars. It was a clear night, which made it cool. But it felt good. He studied the stars, but he couldn’t pick any out that he could identify. He thought about where he might belong. Was he from New Mexico? Texas? Arizona? Maybe somewhere much further than that.

When Ember came out the door, he turned to look at her. “It’s a beautiful sky tonight.”

She moved next to him and they looked at the stars. When they saw a falling star, she pointed at it.

“Make a wish.”

John closed his eyes and made his wish. He wished there’d never come a day when he couldn’t go outside and look at the stars with Ember by his side.

She looked at him. “What’d you wish for?”

“I can’t tell you. Do you not know proper wish protocol?”

“Sorry. How foolish of me.”

He looked at the sky again for a few more minutes. “Where do you think we’ll be a year from now?”

She took a few moments to answer. “I don’t know, John. I guess I hope you’ll be where you belong.”

He nodded. “What if this is where I belong? I really wouldn’t mind being right here looking at the stars with you by my side a year from now.”

Ember took his hand. “I wouldn’t mind that either, John.”

He turned and looked at her in a way he shouldn’t, then let go of her hand and took a step back. “Big day tomorrow. We should get some sleep.”

They headed for the door, and he held it open for her. She stopped inside and looked at him.

“I’m glad you figured out who the woman was.”

“Me too.”

“Good night, John.

He watched her go to Scott’s room and close the door. Then he went to the couch and picked up the book he’d been reading earlier, before Ember forced him to do yoga. He sat down and opened the book. It’d be awhile before he’d be able to sleep. He had to distract his mind from thinking about Ember.

Chapter eleven

"I'm sure plenty of good cowboys wear black hats."

When he heard Ember talking to him and shaking his shoulder, John opened his eyes and found her standing over him.

“What?”

“You fell asleep on the couch.”

“Oh shit. Is it morning?”

“Yes. The parade starts in an hour.”

She backed up a few feet, and he sat up. “I’ll make breakfast.”
