She nudged him. “I’m not the one obsessed with them. You go through a pack a week.”

“Well, they’re damn good.”

“Better than anything I could make.” They walked past a booth selling sunglasses and Ember stopped walking. “Do you need sunglasses?”

“No.”

“Not even to drive?”

He touched the brim of his hat. “That’s what the hat is for.”

“Huh. I thought it was just to look cool.”

“It’s for that, too.”

Ember laughed. “Well, it’s working.”

They reached the food booths and checked them all out before deciding on hamburgersfrom one and corn on the cob from another. John also got an order of cheesy curly fries. Then they found a table and sat down.

John looked around. “You said something about beer?”

“Oh right. It’s that way, I think.”

John stood. “Do you want one?”

“Yes, please.”

He left to get two beers in the beer tent. There were a few tables inside, and one of them had four men in cowboy hats sitting at it. John nodded at them as he walked by, then went to the bar and ordered two beers. While he waited, a woman came up beside him to place an order and she smiled at him.

“How you doing?”

He tipped his hat. “Fine, thank you. And you?”

“Needing a beer to get through the rest of the day. I’m just waiting for the dance tonight.”

“I see.” The bartender set the two beers in front of John and the woman looked at them.

“I don’t suppose those are both for you?”

John smiled. “No. They’re not.”

She touched his arm. “The good ones are always taken.”

He cocked his head at her. “And how do you know if I’m good or not?”

“I can tell. You have a good ol’ boy, down-home, boy scout, one woman man vibe about you.”

“Wow. You’re very perceptive. I believe I’m all of those things and more.” He picked up the beer, then gave her a wink and left the tent. When he got back to the table, he grinned at Ember. “I guess I’m not as old as I think I am.”

“What happened?”

“I just got hit on.”

She laughed. “All right. Do you want to go talk to her?”

He cocked his head. “Why would I want to do that?”

She shrugged.
