He laughed, then shook his head. “Still.”

She stopped walking and looked at him. “You are definitely a parent of teens or older.”

“Why do you say that?”

“Because only a parent would think they had any input into what their adult child does or doesn’t do.”

“You must care what they think.”

“Of course I do. But ultimately, my decisions are my decisions.”

“Most parents interject to protect their children from making the same mistakes they made.”

Ember took his arm and started walkingagain. “You’re definitely a parent.”

“Do you think my kids believe I’m trying to run their lives?”

“No. I think your kids know that you love them.”

“And wondering where the hell I am?”

“Yes. That too.” Ember spotted a game where she could win a goldfish. She smiled at John. “We need a pet.”

“Ember. If we win a fish, we’ll be hauling the thing around with us the rest of the day.”

“It’s a tiny goldfish bowl. How much trouble could it be?” He grumbled as she pulled him toward the game. “Come on Mr. Grumpy. Win me a goldfish.”

“Only if I get to name it.”

“Okay.”

John had more luck tossing the ball into the goldfish bowls, and after only three tries, Ember had her goldfish.

“Not bad. We only paid six dollars for a fifty cent gold fish.”

“And his bowl.”

“Okay. A dollar-fifty.”

She held up the bowl and looked at it, then looked at John.

“So, what’s its name going to be?”

John thought for a moment. “Bob.”

She shook her head. “You can’t name a fish, Bob.”

“Why not? Besides, you agreed to let mename it.”

She sighed. “Fine. Bob it is.”

When they heard music coming from the bandstand, they headed in that direction. It was the start of the community talent showcase.

They found two seats and Ember nudged John. “Do you suppose you have any musical talent?”

“I’m sure as hell not going to find out in front of two hundred people.”

She laughed. “I guess that could be potentially embarrassing.”
