“Well, I’m pretty sure you weren’t wearing your boots.”

He sat on the end of the bed and took off his boots. “What else?”

“Just keep going. I’ll tell you when to stop.”

When Scott and Aaron approached the shore, John went down to the water’s edge to meet them. “How’d it go? Are we eating fish for dinner?”

“No fish. But we had a great time.”

“Good.” John lifted Aaron out of the boat andhelped him take off his lifejacket.

“Where’s Aunt Ember? I want to tell her about the fish I almost caught.”

“She’s in the house.”

Aaron ran off and John help Scott carry the gear to the porch. Scott glanced at him. “Have you fished while I was gone?”

“No. We took the boat to the rope swing, though.”

Scott grinned. “Did you jump in?”

“Yeah. Cold as hell.”

“It always is.”

They reached the porch and Ember was with Aaron on the porch swing. “Sounds like you almost had a successful fishing trip.”

“Yeah. He almost might’ve caught a fish.”

Scott sat in a chair and John leaned against the railing. “Am I bunking on the couch while you’re here?”

“Yeah. Sorry. Em can keep the bedroom and Aaron and I can share his room.”

“That’s fine.”

Ember glanced at Scott. “Are you sure you don’t want your room back?”

“No. You’re all settled in there. I’m fine with Aaron.”

“Okay. But if you change your mind. We can switch it up.”

“It’s fine, Em.”

They spent the afternoon talking, then Scott grilled burgers on the barbeque for dinner. After Aaron went to bed, they all played Rummy.

Ember and John put their ongoing marathon game aside and started fresh with Scott. To Ember’s utter frustration, John won most every hand and ended up with the high score for the night.

“Are you kidding me?”

John laughed. “Maybe it isn’t the luck of the draw. Maybe I’m a hell of a rummy player.” He got up and excused himself to go to the restroom and Scott looked at Ember.

“Okay. What’s going on with you two?”

“What? Nothing. What do you mean?”

“Ember. I see the way you two look at each other. Are you guys…?”

“No, of course not.”
