“My goodness, you guys are great!”

Aaron nodded. “I was riding so fast.”

“I saw that.”

John patted Aaron’s leg. “Alright. I think that’s about it for the day.”

“Aww.”

“You can come back anytime.”

Scott lifted him down. Then John dismounted and handed the reins to Everett.

Aaron touched his hat. “Do you need the hat back?”

John smiled. “No. I bought that for you. Just don’t forget to bring it back next time you come ride.”

“I won’t.”

Scott nudged him. “What do you say to John?”

“Thanks, John.”

“You’re welcome.”

Scott looked at Ember. “I guess we should head home and let John get back to work.”

Ember glanced at John then turned to Scott. “I think I’ll stay awhile. John can bring me back tothe house in a couple of hours.”

Scott nodded. “Okay. We’ll see you at home, then.” He looked at John. “Thanks again.”

“Anytime.”

Scott and Aaron headed for the car, and Everett patted Sugar. “I’ll go put this lady away. That afternoon group cancelled their ride, so you’re off the clock, John.”

“Thanks, Everett.”

John looked at Ember. “I’m off the clock.”

“So I heard.”

He took her hand. “Let’s put Ebony away, then I’ll show you my cabin.”

“I’d love to see your cabin.”

“It’s not much. And it’s not very big.”

“Does it have a bed?”

John grinned. “Oh yeah. It has a bed.”

“Then that’s all we need.”

Ember was curled up in the crook of John’s body. He had his arm over her and he was breathing deeply into the back of her neck as he slept. They’d had quite a workout, and he was worn out. She wanted to sleep, but she also wanted to enjoy being wrapped up in his arms. It was a wonderful, safe feeling.

When John started to stir and mumble in his sleep, she thought it was cute. But as it progressed, she realized he was dreaming. Then it seemed like maybe it wasn’t a very pleasantdream. She moved away from him and turned around. John had tears running down his cheeks.

Ember put a hand on his arm. “John. John, wake up.”
