“Looks like I’m going to Salt Lake.”

She put her arms around him. “When?”

“I can go anytime this week. But I’d just as soon get it over with. The weather is supposed to be clear for the next week.”

“So, you’re leaving…?”

“Tomorrow. I just want to get it done.”

She sighed. “I agree. Better to do it, then have us think about it and dread it for a few days.”

“Exactly.” He looked at the lasagna. “We should eat that while it’s hot.”

He sat at the table and she moved the lasagna from the stove to a hot pad on the table. She brought a loaf of bread and got him a beer, before sitting down across from him.

He served himself. “I don’t know if I’ve always been a fan of lasagna. Or if this is just really, really good. But I love lasagna.”

“Thank you. I’m sure in your other life you had it. Your mother probably made excellent lasagna.”

“My Italian mother?”

“Or your Native American grandmother.”

“Indian lasagna?”

“Yes.”

“Hmm. I guess it’s possible.”

“They both probably baked for you, too.”

“Chocolate chip cookies?”

“Yes. I’m sure they didn’t buy you store bought dessert.”

He looked at her for a moment. “I’ve about resigned myself to not knowing and maybe not ever knowing. And I’m fine with that.”

She reached for his hand. “I don’t want you to give up hope.”

“I’m not. I just think it would’ve come back to me by now.”

“Well, I’d be lying if I didn’t say I like having you all to myself. But I also know that’s selfish.”

“It’s not. I really don’t think it is. It just mightbe you and me, kid.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. I’m so sure that I think while I’m gone, you should plan a very simple…ceremony.”

“Ceremony?”

“Ember. I don’t have a ring for you, because I didn’t really plan this. But I think it’s time we got married.”

She stood and went to him, then sat on his lap. “John. You don’t think it’s too soon?”

He shook his head. “No. I love you. And you love me. Why wait any longer?”

“I do love you.”
