He nodded at Genny. “Genevieve.”

“Afternoon, Brady. Do you have some cuttings for my birds today? I know your order comes in on Wednesdays.”

“I do. Let me go get that for you. And while I do, check out those blackberries. I bet Jake wouldn’t mind a nice blackberry pie to welcome him home.” He headed for the backroom and Genny went to the blackberry display.

She looked them over, then picked one up and tasted it.

Jake frowned at her. “Are you supposed to do that?”

“He told me to check them out. Am I supposed to take Brady Miller’s word that they’re good?”

“Well, he has been in the business since hewas twenty-something.”

She tasted another one as Brady came up behind them with a banana box full of vegetable and fruit trimmings.

“What do you think?”

Genny shrugged. “I don’t know. They’re a little over-ripe.”

He handed the box to Jake. “Are you kidding? These berries are perfect. Try another.”

Genny sighed and ate another berry. “I guess they’ll be good enough for pie. But they’re definitely on their way out.”

Brady scowled. “I know berries and I know when they’re ripe and when they’re on their way out. But I’m not forcing you to take them, Genevieve. Mrs. Griffin will be glad to buy the lot of them.”

Genny squinted at him. “I’ll take two cartons. Just enough for two pies. Bea Griffin is free to take the rest of them. I really don’t care.” She picked up two cartons of blackberries.

Brady smiled at her. “If you need to find a home for one of those pies, I’m rather fond of blackberry pie.”

“Why on earth would I make a pie for you, Brady? I’ve got a family to take care of.”

“Of course. Just thought I’d mention it. Rumor has it you make a hell of a blackberry pie.”

“The people of this town should find better things to gossip about. Thank you for the trimmings.”

“Of course. Anytime. I’m glad they go to good use. And I’ve got pumpkins coming in next week. They’ll be perfect for your Thanksgiving pie.”

“I’ll keep that in mind, Brady.”

Jake and Genny headed for the cashier and Jake glanced at her. “When did that happen?”

“What?”

“All that passive-aggressive flirting. What was that all about?”

“I was not flirting with Brady Miller, passive-aggressively or otherwise.”

Jake smiled. “Okay. If you say so.”

She shook her head. “I’ve known Brady all my life. Why would I suddenly want to start flirting with him?”

“Maybe because you’ve been single for twenty years and he’s never been married.”

She didn’t respond as they reached the cashier. Genny paid for the blackberries, then they went to the truck.

Jake put the box in the back of the truck next to the bird cages, then got in behind the wheel. Genny aggressively put on her seatbelt.

“Flirting with Brady. What a ridiculous notion.”
