“It’s fine, Ember.”

“I should go.”

“You don’t need to run off. I haven’t told you about my great-grandparents yet.”

Ember laughed. “We’ll save it for another day.”

“Okay. I can go back about five generations.”

“I can’t wait to hear about all of them.”

“Good night, Ember.”

“Jake. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Jake watched Ember walk across the grass to her car. As she drove away, she gave him a wave. He waved back, then finished his beer.

Sage came through the front door a few minutes later. “Is she gone?”

“Yeah.”

“I like her. She’s just what granddad needs.”

“You think so?”

“Yes. And I think Sawyer has a little crush.”

Jake laughed. “Likes those older women, huh?” He looked at the stars again. “I discovered something tonight.”

Sage came up next to him. “What?”

“Whatever else I was doing for those five months, I was also learning the constellations.”

“Really?”

“Yep. See those three stars right there? That’s Orion’s belt.” He spent the next thirty minutes naming off the constellations visible in the late September night sky. And he wasn’t quite sure who was more impressed.

But it was getting late and cold, so they went inside with the three dogs, and Jake perked up the fire in the fireplace before going in to check on Jacob. He knocked on the door.

“Dad.” When he heard a grumble, Jake opened the door. “Can I come in?”

“Sure. Of course. Get the hell in here.”

Jake went into the dimly lit room along withIra, who became Jacob’s dog the day they brought him home from the shelter. It was way too dim for Jacob to read the book he was holding.

“Can I turn another light on for you?”

“No.” Jacob set the book aside. “About ready to call it a night.” He patted the bed and Ira jumped up and laid down at his feet.

Jake went to the bed and sat in the chair next to it. “Do you want to talk about the nurse, Dad?”

“Now you want to talk to me about it? After she’s already hired?”

“Dad. Gen and I…we just want you to have the best chance of getting better. And we think Ember will give that to you. You need to give her a chance.”

Jacob nodded. “I know you meant well. I also know Genny probably blindsided you with the news. So, you don’t need to pretend you were in on the planning. This has Genevieve written all over it.”

Jake laughed. “Yeah. She told me on Friday.”
