I looked around wildly, suddenly eager to be out of this space. Who knew how many people had had their noses broken or their eyes punched in this exact spot. Eric and Jane stood close together, watching with concern.

Brandon's brows furrowed. "Then what? He's not going to bother us anymore, Skylar. I made sure of it!"

"You really don't get it, do you? That was some scary shit you just did there, Brandon."

"Skylar, I was just giving the little shit exactly what he deserved," Brandon tried to argue, but I cut him off.

"I need to walk home," I said. "I'll be there in a bit. But this...I just need a bit of time to think."

As if on cue, David rumbled up with the Mercedes, while the Escalade carrying Lucas and Craig pulled up behind him, and they jumped out. Craig took one look at the blood on his boss's hands and frowned.

"What happened?" he demanded.

Brandon sighed.

"Lucas, I need an escort home," I said to my bodyguard.

I turned to walk away, not even waiting for Lucas to follow me down the street. But I only made it a few steps before my arm was grabbed and I was whirled around.

"Skylar," Brandon started, but I jerked my arm away.

"Brandon," I said as calmly as I could muster. I was past the point of anger. I was scared of the man who was supposed to become my husband, and I really wasn't sure what I was supposed to do with that. "I love you, and I'm not running away. But I need some air right now. I need some space to think."

And before the forlorn look in his deep blue eyes could keep me from leaving, I turned around and walked out of the alley. Each step that took me away from the nasty events somehow only added more to my confusion.
