“Hi, Ben!” Luna chirps, peeking from behind her.

“Uh, hey!” I respond after in inward smack to the head. “How are you guys?”

“We’re, uh, good,” Kasey smiles. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know you’d be here,” she says distractedly as she watches Luna tear past her in the direction of where I saw her room. “Luna apparently left her favorite pair of pajamas here, and the world will end if she goes another night without them,” she smiles nervously, clearly not yet recovered from being caught off guard by me occupying her brother’s home.

“No, it’s fine,” I assure her with a tentative smile of my own as I take her in. Her hair is piled up on her head, her face is free of makeup, and she’s dressed in a hoodie with a pair of cut-off shorts that show off some dynamite legs. She looks naturally beautiful, and I can tell she doesn’t know it. “Luna looks good,” I observe in the direction of the kid’s room to cut some of the awkwardness.

“Oh she’s doinggreat!” Kasey excitedly regales. “Seriously, two days of taking it easy and she was back to her old self! I still can’t get over it…” she trails off, giving me a look of wonder that makes those eyes of hers sparkle.

“I’m glad to hear it,” I tell her as my shaggy hair falls in my face; I toss it out of my eyes with a quick head flick.

“Yeah, I’m so glad she’ll be good for basketball camp in a couple of days that she’s back to being pumped about.”

“That’s awesome,” I retort. “I played ball in high school,” I contribute. I knew Luna played from the day she fell in the water, but there wasn’t a time or place to mention it.

“Are you serious? That’s pretty bomb,” she finishes with a closed-mouth smile that make her lips look incredibly kissable. We stand in silence for a moment and I think I catch her eyes scanning down my body, which makes my dick jump in my shorts.

Holy fuck!

I’m in basketball shorts; not fucking good… at least they’re black. I nervously look to her face to try to register if she saw anything, but she simply blinks before she lets out a sigh.

“We should get out of your hair. Luna!” she calls as she walks towards the hallway that leads to the bedrooms. “What’s taking you so long?”

“I’m still looking!” Luna calls back.

“How are you still - oh my God!” Kasey exclaims when she reaches the doorway of Luna’s room. “How on Earth do your aunt and uncle let you get away with keeping your room like this?! It’s a disaster in here! No wonder you can’t find them!”

“Don’t judge me!” Luna calls back, and out of nowhere, a laugh bursts out of me. Kasey’s head snaps in my direction, and when she’s sees me chuckling, she rolls her eyes with smile.

“Whatever, I’m going to have a word with your uncle about how he needs to make you pick up after yourself, or when he has kids of his own he’s in for a reckoning,” she calls over her shoulder as she journeys back to the living room where I’m still standing. “Matt totally spoils that kid,” she shakes her head and I give one more chuckle.

Holy shit, I forgot how good it feels to laugh, I realize, as I feel the endorphins working their way through my bloodstream from Luna’s candid quip.

“Two minutes and we’re leaving without them!” Kasey calls to her daughter again, signaling I have two more minutes left of their presence. As I toss my hair out of my eyes again, I realize something.

“Hey,” I get her attention and she tilts her chin up at me, ready to listen with a gentle smile.

“You said if I needed anything I could let you know.”

“Yeah,” she nods with her dark eyebrows arched, ready to hear more.

“I need a haircut.”

“Oh… really?” she tilts her head.

“Really.” I might be ready to start seeing people better again. Rather, I’m ready to see her without my hair in my eyes. And maybe… let her see me.

“Well, I kind of like the shag,” she holds up her finger and waves it towards the top of my head. “But you want it, you got it. How long are you staying in town for?”

“I don’t know,” I shake my head and shrug before stuffing my hands in my pockets.

“Okay,” she nods softly. “Well, I’m at Making Waves Salon in midtown Tuesday through Saturday. Come by anytime you want and I’ll get you in.”

“Great,” I nod just as Luna comes parading back into the room, a pair of pajamas held triumphantly in the air. They look like they have female cartoon characters all over them that look like super heroes in teenage girl form.

“Fooouund them!” she triumphantly sings as she reaches her mom’s side. Kasey wraps a loving arm around her as she opens the door.

“I’ll see you sometime soon then I guess.”
