He smiles and his shoulders sag in relief. “That’s good. I’ve always wanted a family, even though I never believed it would be possible for me.”

“Why not?”

“I believed I was too broken and dark to find love.”

I squeeze his hand on the table. “That’s ridiculous. I love every part of you, even the darkness.”

He smiles. “I know. That’s why I’m pretty sure I won the damn lottery by finding my way to you.”

A server approaches with our pizzas. “A margarita?” he asks.

I hold my hand up and he places it in front of me.

“And diavolo for you,” he says, setting it down in front of Oak.

I know it’s eating away at him not being able to speak Italian here, but we both agreed it was safer, so we didn’t raise questions about his background.

“Thank you,” I say, smiling at him.

He nods. “Buon appetito.” He walks away, leaving us to enjoy our food.

I tilt my head. “Is this pizza better than yours?”

“For certain,” he says, laughing. “Mine isn’t a patch on proper wood fired Neapolitan pizza.”

“I’ll be the judge of that.” I cut a piece with my knife and fork and lift it to my mouth, tasting it. “Oh my God,” I say, still chewing. “It's the best pizza in the world.”

He smiles smugly. “I told you.”

“You’re right, it’s better than yours, but yours was very good for homemade.”

He shakes his head and tucks into his own pizza. “Always so diplomatic, my wife. One of the many reasons I love you so much.”

“I love you, too,” I say, feeling a little overwhelmed as I stare into his eyes.

Ironically, the one place I knew I wouldn’t fit in was the place I found my soul mate. It’s crazy to think that the principal of a school that stands for everything I despise about our world turned out to be the love of my life.
