“If the price is right—and I mean you come out of the deal grinning like you robbed a bank and will definitely get away with it—then you move in here with me. Like you said, most of your clothes are here anyway. Plenty of room for your tools.” I frowned. “Not sure about the bedroom furniture.” While I would never say anything to hurt his feelings, his bedroom suite was cheap, old, and barely hanging in.

He laughed. “Yeah, that bedroom furniture has to go.”

I breathed a sigh of relief. Tough subject successfully avoided.

“So, where’s the downside? I get you to my selfish self, and you get a wad of money for a house that two other people are going to rehab.”

He was quiet for a minute. “I love you, Andi. You know that, right?”

“I do know that. I love you, too. I don’t want to spend a day without you in it.”

“That sounded like a marriage proposal,” he said.

My heart leapt into my throat and lodged there. I grew quiet. “Is that what you want? To marry me?”

They faced each other in the bed.

“If you’ll have me, then yes. I know you’re too good for me, and I’m lucky you ever gave this mug of mine a chance. I’ll go to my grave loving you, so yeah. That’s what I want,” Zack said. “I want to marry you.”

“Whew,” I said, wiping the back of my hand over my brow. “Gosh, I’ve never proposed before. That’s scary.” The tension in the room popped when he laughed.

He pulled me in for a kiss. “I’ve never been proposed to before. Propositioned by a few hookers during arrests, but that’s totally different.”

I giggled. “I should say so. Oh!” I clapped my hands together. “Ring shopping. That’ll be more fun than clothes shopping.”

He grinned. “You can have any ring that fits my budget, not yours.”

“Honestly, I don’t need a ring.” She hugged him. “You’re better than any old ring.”

My doorbell chimed, and I groaned. “Ignore it. They’ll go away.”

The bell chimed again, followed by pounding on the front door.

“I don’t think they’re leaving,” Zack said.

“Grrr. I’ll get rid of whoever it is.”

“Naw. It’s almost five. We should get dressed for dinner at least.”

“We could do naked fajitas…?”

“Never again. That sizzling meat made, uh, my meat a little nervous.”

I was laughing as we got out of bed and threw on clothes. Meanwhile, the racket downstairs continued.

“Damn, whoever is there is persistent,” I muttered. “Damn bad timing.” I flung open the door. “What?”

Dee and Hank stood hand-in-hand on my front porch.

I frowned, “What are you doing here?”

“You’re right on time,” Zack said from behind me.

I turned and looked at him with a confused frown. “On time for what?”

“Your surprise. Come on in.”

The two men shook hands, as Dee gave me a hug.
