“Where are we headed?” she asked, snagging his attention.

“Where do you need to go?”

She shrugged. “I figured I’ll go where you go.”

“Obviously. I have the motorcycle.”

“Not what I meant,” she countered. “I meant us. Together. Riding off into the sunset.”

“Uh, no. I don’t think so.”

“Why? Already got a girlfriend?”

“No.”

“Well, you do now. We’re meant to be. Like Thanos, we’re inevitable.”

“I don’t think that’s the analogy you should go with. He wiped out half the universe.”

“They came back,” she said with a shrug.

He smirked and cocked his head as he studied her. Not moving. Not even blinking. Why did it feel like he stared into her soul?

“You know what I think?” he asked, but then continued, not giving her a chance to answer. “I think you’re more than this ditsy façade. I think there’s something about you that you don’t show to very many people.”

She tilted her head. “And what would that be?”

His eyes narrowed. “Not quite sure. Yet. What I do know is that you’re resourceful. You’re smart. Completely brave, or maybe psychotic. I haven’t figured that out yet. What dark secrets make you tick, Vivi?”

He was wrong. She wasn’t resourceful at all, and Zaylah was the brave one. Her sister had done so much for her, but what had she ever done in return? Nothing much.

“I know O’Shannon made Zaylah do horrible things.” It made her heart ache at the thought of her sister being at the mercy of that dickbag. The man’s heart was as black as his soul. “She would’ve been able to get away if it hadn’t been for me.”

“You don’t know that.”

“What I know is that she deserves happiness. Away from what Brady did. Away from what I cost her. Even when we see each other again, it’s going to be different. Our lives might be completely fucked up with no normal in sight. This boyfriend Thorn mentioned my sister has, do you know if she’s happy?”

“I don’t know if I’d call him aboyfriend,” he answered. “Thorn knows more about Damon Barese than I do, but I definitely wouldn’t call him a boy.”

“I had a lot of time to think while staring up at my bedroom ceiling at the root beer factory. I want Zaylah to have a life that makes her happy. Where she doesn’t have to worry about me.”

He leaned forward and rested his elbows on the table. “How?”

“If you’re agreeable, I’d like you to take me away. She’ll let me go if she thinks I’m with someone who will take care of me.”

“You’re a grown woman. At least, I think you are. You’re kinda short.”

He held out his hand to measure her height, only he made her as tall as the table. She glowered at his warped sense of humor.

“Way to boost my ego there,” she grumbled. “Beautiful Man.”

“You stop calling me that and we can hash out a deal.”

She leaned forward. “What kind of deal?”

“I’ll let you come with me where I go.”

“In exchange for what? If you say sex, then I’m all in.”
