“Not even going to play hardball?”

“Why? Are you terrible in bed?”

“What?” he asked with a laugh. “I’ve not had any complaints so far.”

“Hate to break this to you, but if there were, they were probably said behind your back.”

He blinked. “That’s not reassuring at all.”

Thorn returned and slid back onto his seat. “That was Barese’s man, Massimo. We’re meeting him at the Gateway rest stop. Ready to go?”

They nodded and rose, heading out the door to the bikes. She put on her helmet and settled behind Lincoln and wrapped her arms around him. She was getting used to this.

Chapter Six

Lincoln watched the two sisters unite. They had just arrived at the rest stop, and he immediately zoned into the limo parked in the extra-long spot designated for RVs and semis.

“Vivi! Vivi!” Zaylah Wence yelled excitedly.

The sisters embraced, babbling and crying tears of joy. Deep in his heart, away from his own pain, happiness bloomed at seeing how much they loved one another. Lincoln hadn’t thought he could feel that emotion again—love between siblings—but he was glad for them. It wasn’t often a moment like this rolled around.

Thorn walked over to Massimo to talk, which left him with nothing to do but watch Vivi. He was man enough to admit she confused him. He had no trouble getting women to fall into bed with him, but he had a feeling sex with her would be explosive. She was a huge dynamo wrapped up in a petite body.

“…Isn’t he beautiful?”

He gave an internal sigh. “You gotta stop saying that in front of people.”

The woman rolled her eyes. “Linc, this is my big sis, Zaylah. Another bizarre-o name from our weird-ass parents. I’ve wracked my brain for years trying to understand why Brady got the ordinary name.”

He gave a nod of acknowledgment to her sister. For some reason, he had this need to reassure her. “I like your name. It fits you.”

She beamed up at him. Something twisted in his gut. Not in a bad way, but in a good way that scared the shit out of him. Vivi was beautiful. Hair as dark as midnight. Hazel eyes that sparkled with mischief. He glanced at Zaylah, and she was a taller, older version of her sister. Beautiful, yes, but she didn’t have the fire he saw in Vivi.

His gaze strayed to Damon Barese. The elegant cut of his suit belied the hardened mafia king of the Mississippi. It seemed the Death Riders had just acquired a new best friend.

“We’re moving to Ireland,” Vivi called out, giving him a sly little grin. “Nice to know everyone.”

“What?” Lincoln asked, blinking in confusion.

She laughed as Barese practically snarled his denial of that plan. Vivi took a step back and announced that was a joke. It looked like the mafia king wanted to strangle her.

The scene played out and before he knew it, Vivi had joined him. She gave him a nod toward his motorcycle. As she slipped on the helmet, he noticed a resigned sadness in her eyes. It made him want to cheer her up. He wanted to see her happy again.

“Where do you want to go?” he asked.

“Anywhere.”

Vivi waved to her sister, and then they sped away.

****

Anywhere was a little vague, and they ended up riding far and away. She watched the world go by, and wondered where she would go. How far would they ride? As the wind wrapped around her, a tangible essence of freedom formed. It was an unrestrained pleasure she’d been unaware of. Her senses assaulted in only the best way. A journey of both terror and peace. The duality perfectly matched between excitement and the serenity of a mind at rest.

Eventually, they rode into a town named Cardinal. The main street was stuck back in the seventies, with red brick buildings and awnings that desperately needed a modern update. Even the concrete of the sidewalk was stained with age. People meandered slowly between stores, some waving at them. Lincoln always returned the greetings, which showed the coexistence between the town and the club.

They ended up at the local ice cream parlor. When he parked the bike, she slid off and bounced on her feet.

“Oh! I love ice cream!”
