The next day was the same, and the day after that. Each morning they’d arrive and she would head to the pool-house while Lincoln ensconced himself with Pietro Romanelli in his office. By the fourth day, Vivi was ready to do something different, so while Lincoln went to the Romanelli household, she pulled up a rideshare and went exploring.

She was dropped off at Navy Pier where she took a river cruise up onto Lake Michigan. Afterward, she got something to eat and walked up and down the boardwalk. Then she hopped in a cab to the zoo and spent the rest of the day enjoying the animals. For dinner she found a pizza place for the Chicago classic deep dish.

Around eleven she took a cab back to the Nightmare Kings clubhouse. People greeted her and Kian asked if he could have a rematch, but she was tired and went to her and Lincoln’s room where she took a quick shower and fell into bed.

Sometime in the night, he joined her, spooning her body and laying his arm around her stomach to pull her into his warmth. Sighing, she fell back into a deep, dreamless sleep.

Chapter Nineteen

Brim held Leia’s hair back as she puked in the toilet. Stubborn woman, telling him to leave as she upchucked, like a bit of sickness would gross him out.

“I’m not dumb, you know.”

“W-what?” she managed to croak right before she vomited again. Or tried to. All that was coming up was bile because her stomach was empty.

“I’ve been through this before, remember?” he asked. “I recognize the signs. Retching in the morning. Unable to eat anything more than plain toast. The absence of your period.”

“Oh God,” she moaned as she flushed the toilet. She collapsed against the wall. Tears tracked down her pale cheeks, making her look wrecked. “I took a test yesterday.”

“We’re having a baby,” he said. He lifted her tenderly and brought her over to the sink where he put paste on toothbrush and handed it to her. “You didn’t need to take a test to know.”

“Thanks,” she whispered. She brushed her teeth quickly, and then she splashed water on her face. He handed her a towel to dry off. “Are you mad?”

He searched her face. “Are you?”

“I asked you first.”

“No, I’m not mad,” he said softly and brushed aside some hair lingering on her cheek. “How could I be mad at a life created by you and me?”

She reached over and squeezed his hand. “I’m not mad either. And I thought … we should honor his or her big brother. Natalie for a girl. Nathaniel for a boy.”

Damn it, he didn’t want to cry.

“I think those are wonderful names,” he managed to say. Even he heard the hitch in his tone and cleared his throat, trying to regain control of his emotions. “Although, I was thinking Leo for a boy. Named after his amazing mother.”

She cupped his face. “Leo Nathaniel.”

“Yeah,” he said, smiling. “I like that.”

Just before he could lean down and kiss her, his phone rang. He pulled it from his pocket and saw it was Bolt. He answered it.

“Yeah?”

“Hey, Boss,” Bolt greeted. “Sorry to bother you, but there’s a package here in front of the clubhouse door with your name on it.”

“What? From whom?”

“I don’t see a return address. This had to be delivered in the dead of night. I’m the only one up so far.”

“Okay, well, put it on my desk and I’ll get to it when I arrive.”

“Sure, Boss. You know, I hada—”

His voice abruptly cut off as a tremendous boom sounded in Brim’s ear. The call immediately ended.

“What the fuck?” he said. He quickly rang Bolt back, but there was no response.

“What is it?” Leia asked.
