MARCUS

My bird wouldn’t let me shift back before he got to see her. I didn’t know he was that strong, that he could control us like that. But when she tried to shoo us out that was enough for me to take back control. But also accidentally shift.

And now Avery’s staring at me like I just grew feathers, which isn’t entirely untrue, I suppose.

“Avery, I can explain,” I start.

“You can explain what? That you’re somehow a fucking bird?” she yells.

Putting my hand on the small of her back, I gently guide her back inside and close the door. We don’t need the cops called because of her yelling.

“Yes. Yes, I can change my form into a bird,” I calmly say. “But that doesn’t make me any less your boyfriend. It just… adds to it.”

“How does that add anything?” Her tone is flat. “Because I don’t see how it could add to anything. I’m living in a nightmare. First, you lied about where you lived like some bellend and now you’re a character out of some cheesy paranormal book? Nope, I’m outta here.”

She turns and opens the door but I push it closed. “Listen, you’re overreacting.”

Her eyes grow big.

Maybe that wasn’t the best thing to say.

“I’m still me, still Marcus,” I say, putting a hand to my chest.

“But I barely know Marcus, and now there’sthis?”

“You’re right, you’re right. It’s a lot all at once. But it won’t affect anything, the only time I ever shift anymore is to see you.”

Her eyes get even bigger as realization hits. “Excuse me? You’re telling me Bird, the bird I’ve shared so much with these past months, has actually been you?! You get how insane that is, right?”

This is about to go south. Fast. I need to get her out of here so she’s not so overwhelmed.

Pinching the brow of my nose between my fingers I say, “Yeah, I do. Look, give it a day. Think on it. I’ll be at the cabin tomorrow, waiting for you. Please, just give us a chance.”

I reach for her hand, kissing the knuckles as she pulls away and heads out the door, saying, “Just give me some time.”

“I love you, Avery. Always remember that,” I say as she walks around the house.

Chapter5

Avery

Marcus’s words reach me as I round the side of Laney’s house.

Damn him. I love him too.

But he can turn into a bird?!

Seriously?

I don’t even know what to think, let alone do.

“Ah my dear, you finally found out?” Laney’s voice makes me jump.

“Geez Laney, I figured you’d be at work by now.”

“Finn’s opening for me today, I had a feeling I’d need to be here this morning,” she says, noticing the look on my face.
