While I wasn’t looking forward to the wedding, I was glad that I was getting to spend plenty of time with my son at a nice bed and breakfast. It would be a good opportunity for him to play with some of the kids that would be at the wedding. He didn’t get much interaction with others his age outside of preschool.

Alice, one of Colin’s nannies, was already standing in the foyer and I grinned at her. She was one of my favorites because she doted on Colin so much.

“Hey, beautiful,” I said to her. Alice was fifty years old and absolutely wonderful with Colin. Her green eyes packed a punch and I was certain she had been a stunning woman when she was younger. She was still a very lovely-looking lady. I adored her, and so did Colin, and I was glad she was there.

“Flattery will get you everywhere,” Alice said with a laugh, and she took Colin from my arms as I walked up toward her.

“We’ll go to the pool later, buddy,” I told Colin, but he just yawned, still half asleep. I was glad he wasn’t that upset about leaving me, certain it was because he was with Alice.

As Alice took Colin toward the elevator, I noticed Toby coming down the stairs a little too heavily and with a bright smile on his face. I groaned inwardly. He looked like he was already drunk.

He bypassed Colin and Alice like they weren’t even there, which made my blood heat up. Toby had nothing to do with Colin, I wasn’t even sure he knew how old he was. It made me angry but this was Toby’s wedding, so I pushed it down.

“Hey, we need another couple kegs for the reception,” Toby stated before he even said hello to me. “Plus, there isn’t enough flowers for the wedding. Rachel says she wants tiger lilies instead of the roses, so we have to take those back.”

Surprise, surprise. Toby wanted more money, already. I sighed.

“I can’t really talk about this right now. My girlfriend will be here soon.”

Toby braced himself on the railing, staring at me.

“You have a girlfriend?”

I wanted to roll my eyes but I restrained myself. “Yeah, for about a year now,” I lied, unable to prevent the smirk forming on my lips. I couldn’t wait for Katie to get there and for Toby to see his gorgeous ex on my arm.

“She’s coming in a separate car? Things must be on the rocks,” Toby teased.

“No, she just had to go and get her hair done,” I argued.

“Why would you spend money for a separate car?” Toby asked irritably, as if it was his money instead of mine.

“Because whatever my girl wants, she gets,” I said, my jaw clenched.

Toby scoffed. “She sounds like a real gold digger.”

“No more than Rachel,” I muttered, unable to stop myself.

“What did you say about my future wife?” Toby demanded, and I shook my head, refusing to repeat it.

“Nothing,” I said, my jaw aching from gritting my teeth.

“Whatever, but can we at least get some extra champagne? People are going through it?—”

“Fine,” I said, annoyed. “Just put it on my tab.”

Toby grinned. “Thanks, brother,” he said, and it sounded so ungenuine that I could barely hold myself back from telling him what a piece of shit he was.

I took a deep breath as Toby stomped past me into the foyer to greet a couple of our uncles. Looking at my watch, I anxiously waited for Katie to arrive. I’d booked a suite with interlocking doors so that Toby wouldn’t know we had separate rooms.

I would have preferred to have shared one bed with Katie, but I didn’t think she’d go for that. She certainly was a challenge, and one I planned to take on with full force.

I’d rented out the entire bed and breakfast and everyone was gathered in the foyer for a private party. Toby and Rachel were over by the champagne table, of course, Toby throwing back champagne like it was water while I sipped mine.

After all, I had my son there and I didn’t want to be drunk before the wedding even started. Toby seemed to have no such worry.

My uncles were talking to me about Colin, and I was smiling and telling them all about how he was doing so well at preschool, while keeping an eye on the door, waiting for Katie to show up. I’d given her my credit card and the go ahead to get whatever dress and accessories she desired, and I just knew she would show up looking like a million bucks.

“What’s this I hear about you having a girlfriend?” My Uncle Frank asked, and I grinned.
