“You’ll see,” I murmured, and he raised an eyebrow.

“You’ve been with her nearly a year and we haven’t heard about her? What’s the big secret?”

I laughed and clapped him on the back. “Be patient, Uncle Frank. She’ll be here soon enough.”

“I can’t wait to meet her,” he said, and wandered off back toward the champagne and beer table. I hated that I paid for an open bar, it was like watching money fly out the window, but it was what Toby wanted, and whatever Toby wanted, Toby got.

What he wouldn’t be getting, though, was Katie back. I’d make sure of that. No matter what happened that weekend, I would be the one with Katie on my arm; I would not allow him to take that away from me.

Taking a break from watching the door, I looked over toward Toby and Rachel, watching as Rachel’s face slowly soured. She looked pissed, and I couldn’t stop smiling. Toby, on the other hand, just looked shell-shocked.

I followed their gaze to see Katie walk in, her hair piled on top of her head with ringlets trailing down her back, wearing a red dress that hugged every curve. My mouth went dry and it felt like all the blood instantly flooded south.

She lookedamazing. I wanted to eat her up, and I walked toward her immediately, putting my hand on the small of her back.

Katie’s expression appeared apprehensive and nervous at first, but as she looked over at Toby and Rachel and then back at me, she broke into a beautiful smile.

“I’m going to kiss you now,” I murmured close to her ear, and she gasped, but I didn’t give her time to pull away.

I pulled her into my arms and pressed my mouth against hers, shocked when she parted her lips and stuck her tongue into my mouth. I had to stop myself from going overboard into a full make out session. I finally pulled away long enough to breathe, but I definitely didn’t want to. I wanted to keep kissing her, keep breathing her in.

I glanced over at Toby with a look of triumph, and he just stood there, his mouth gaping open.

It was going to be a wonderful weekend.

Chapter 6

Katie

Adam was right about it being payback—the look on Toby and Rachel’s faces was honestly priceless. Although Adam had only given me a brief warning about kissing me, I can’t say I minded. He stayed right by my side, my arm looped around his bicep.

I was basically the belle of the ball. All of the uncles remembered me and asked how I’d been, what I’d been up to.

“I’ve been busy,” I said demurely to Uncle Frank, who I remembered meeting and liking at the Christmas party three years before.

“I can see that,” he murmured, offering me a glass of champagne which I took gracefully with manicured nails.

I had gone all out with the salon updo, nails, and pedicure, as well as the fabulous dress I was wearing. I knew that red was a little over the top, but I’d picked a pastel color to wear to the wedding proper. For the little meet and greet party, I thought a cocktail dress would make more waves.

And it turned out I was right. Everyone was flocking around me and Adam, and Toby looked like he’d been punched in the gut. Rachel looked livid, which made me even happier than the look on Toby’s face.

Adam was talkative and charming, and he commanded the room with his presence. We chatted with his uncles and aunts and it turned out that Adam and Toby came from a bigger family than I originally thought. Their dad had four brothers, their mom had four sisters, and there were several kids and grandkids who were running around the venue. I looked around for Colin but didn’t see him. I pulled at Adam’s shirt to get his attention.

“Where’s your son?” I asked as he turned to look at me.

“Probably still sleeping off the trip,” he said with a smile. “He’s with his nanny, Alice.”

I didn’t know why I was surprised that Adam had a nanny, given how apparently wealthy he was.

After a couple of glasses of champagne, I began to loosen up a little and started to talk and laugh more with Adam.

I learned that Adam’s company had been doing really well, that it was climbing to the heights of other popular airline companies. The idea was that before long people would be booking with Lanphier Airlines as often, if not more than, big names such as Delta and Southwest.

I wasn’t surprised. Adam clearly had plenty of money to spend, and people who spent money made money. He was also just the type of person, or so I gathered, who went after what he wanted. He’d certainly gone after the fake relationship we had found ourselves in.

“How long have you two been together?” Aunt Theresa asked me, an older woman with a kind smile.

I couldn’t help smiling back, but I looked over at Adam before answering because I wasn’t sure what he’d told them.
