Colin reluctantly trailed back to his father, and I sighed, watching after them. Adam glanced back at me a couple of times and I looked away, hoping that he didn’t notice.

Adam was messing with his phone while the two of them waited for Colin’s cake pop. We locked eyes, and my heart seized in my chest. I hated the way he could make me feel like nothing and everything at the same time, but something about me craved it.

I’d been trying not to think about him for two full months and failing miserably. It was like my heart was cradled in Adam Lanphier’s hands.

The sound of a ding from my phone notifications made me feel like the floor had suddenly dropped out from under me. Oh, God. Was that the doctor? Were the results in?

I took out my phone and scrolled to my email with a shaking hand, seeing that it was, indeed, from Dr. Christine Monroe.

I took a deep breath and opened the email.

Results: Positive.

Desperately, I looked up from my phone, looking for Adam, but he was already gone.

Chapter 16

Adam

Itook Colin home, hoping that I could get Katie out of my mind. That would be easier said than done, since for the last two months I’d thought about her nearly every day.

Colin ate his cake pop and ran upstairs to play while I started dinner—cheeseburgers and fries. It was kind of a weekly thing with us, burgers and fries. Although I could afford to hire a chef, I liked cooking for Colin. Sometimes he would help me and it was a bonding experience between us.

It took my mind off things, at least. Katie had looked so sad sitting there at the coffee shop, and I hated knowing that I might have hurt her.

I put the burgers on the grill and started the French fries. About thirty minutes later, everything was done.

I called for Colin and he bounded down the stairs, eagerly scrambling up into his booster seat. “Burgers, Dad?”

“Of course, burgers. It’s Wednesday, isn’t it?” I said with a smile.

I sat down as he munched on his fries and began to eat. Colin hummed and looked up at me.

“Dad is Katie anyone’s mom?” he asked.

Something clenched in my heart. “No, she’s not, honey. Why do you ask?”

“I was just wondering,” he said, and then paused. He ate a couple more fries and then, “I wish Katie could bemymom.”

I let out a long breath as if I’d just been punched, Colin’s words almost made me feel like I had been. I knew that he was old enough to start asking about his mom, seeing that all his friends had one and he didn’t.

“Buddy,” I started. “You can talk to me if you have questions about your mom.”

Colin frowned. “My old mom left me. Left us. I want a new mom. I want Katie.”

“Why Katie?” I asked gently.

“Because she’s nice. And besides, you like her,” Colin pointed out, pointing a French fry at me.

I smiled. “Do I?”

“Yep. You always look so happy when she’s here,” Colin said matter-of-factly.

Kids thought they knew everything.

“Well, I don’t think she can be your mom, Colin, but she can be your friend.”

Colin nodded, eating the rest of his fries happily.
