Page 61 of Can't Fake Twins

“Of course it matters,” Gray countered. “Especially for a guy like you. And she’s having your twins? You have to talk to her, man.”

“You’re giving me dating advice? When’s the last time you had a girlfriend?”

“High school, but still,” he insisted, leaning against me, his muscles loose from the alcohol. “You need to go to her and fix things.”

“I don’t know,” I mumbled, gulping down my fourth drink. I wanted to be numb. Wanted to forget everything that Katie had said, every thought that I had about her not being over Toby. The idea of her going back to him, after everything we’d been through, made my stomach feel sick, my blood boil.

Toby. All of this was his fault, anyway. If he hadn’t done such a number on her, she would have trusted that I was telling the truth.

I finished my drink, my head spinning slightly, and put down the empty glass on the bar just as Charisma came back over to me, trailing her hand along my shoulder.

“You want to do a duet with me?” she asked in a crooning voice, and I looked at her for a long moment before smiling and shaking my head.

“I have to go see about a girl,” I said, and her face fell but I didn’t have time to feel guilty. Gray cheered after me drunkenly and I laughed, thinking that I should hang out with him more often. My life had been so crazy with work and Colin, and then with Katie and the twins, that I hadn’t gotten to see him much outside of work.

I got out of there, calling my car to take me to see Katie.

I couldn’t wait to get to her, couldn’t bear not being near her, and I was antsy waiting for the car. On the way to her townhouse I kept jiggling my leg so impatiently, even I noticed how ridiculous I seemed.

The alcohol was definitely affecting me, making my face hot and intensifying my emotions. I hoped that Katie wouldn’tnotice how drunk I was, though I knew that was wishful thinking.

My driver pulled up to Katie’s building. "Should I wait for you, sir?"

I looked down at my watch. It was nearly midnight and if things went according to plan, I’d show her how much I loved her and she’d let me stay over. Perhaps it was the alcohol that had made me feel optimistic, but I told my driver he could go and I leapt up the stairs and knocked on Katie’s door, reminding myself that I was there to show her that I was better than Toby.

And I had an idea.

No answer.

I banged on the door a second time, louder. “Katie…”

After what felt like an eternity, she finally came to the door, her face bleary with sleep. “What the hell, Adam?”

I was surprised when she let me in. I couldn’t move and just stared at her, not having seen her in months. Her robe was untied, revealing her baby bump that had grown into what looked like a watermelon and she looked beautiful, sleepy, but beautiful, like when she used to doze off after sex.

“Katie,” I breathed, leaning against the door jamb. “I need you,” I said simply, unable to form any more words.

“Are you... are you drunk? You smell like you fell in a vat of whiskey,” Katie said, covering her nose.

I groaned and laughed. “Is it that obvious?”

“Pretty obvious,” she said, but she was smiling a little, giving me a speck of hope. “What are you doing here?”

“I told you,” I said as I took her by the hand. “I need you. I need you to come with me somewhere. Maybe you should drive.”

“Yes, I definitely should. Where are we going?” she asked, pulling back. She glanced down at her robe. “Wait, let me put some clothes on.”

“You’re really going to go with me?” I asked incredulously.

Katie looked at me for a long moment and shrugged. “Yeah, I am. I’m surprised by my answer too.”

In her car, I wanted to hold her hand, put my hand on her thigh, touch her somehow, but I didn’t want to push it. I was shocked that she’d even agreed to my little road trip. She’d been so angry with me, but as soon as I asked her to come with me, she’d agreed. That had to mean something, didn’t it?

“Okay, where are we going?” she asked as I gave her directions to the suburbs.

“You’re going to get mad if I tell you,” I said.

“I’m going to get mad if youdon’ttell me,” she warned, and I sighed.
