I took a deep breath and walked toward Adam.

Chapter 3

Adam

As Katie approached, I leaned forward, smirking at her, resting my forearms on my thighs as she sat down next to me.

She was just as gorgeous as she was the first night I met her, and I had to admit the fact that she was my brother’s ex-girlfriend just made her even more attractive. Anything I could take away from Toby was just one more notch on my belt. Not to mention, I was more than a little drunk, celebrating with my best friend Danny for his bachelor party.

“Thank you for the drink,” she said, and I looked up at her.

“I didn’t get you a drink,” I replied. “But I can, if you’d like me to.” I put all the heat I felt into my gaze, but Katie looked away.

“We’ve met before, you know, although we weren’t formally introduced,” she said, and I smiled easily at her.

“Of course, I remember,” I said.

“Your name is Adam.”

My smirk turned into a full out smile. “And your name is Katie if I remember correctly.”

“You do,” she said, looking away from me.

“It was a Christmas party, three years ago, I think,” I told her, and she looked back at me with her lips in a tight line.

“It was. And you hit on me as I recall.”

I grinned again. “You’re right, I did,” I admitted, the bass from the music booming in my ears and making me feel a little dizzy.

“Did you know I was your brother’s girlfriend?”

I nodded slowly, my smile fading. “We don’t really get along.”

“So, you hit on meknowingthat I was your brother’s girlfriend?” Katie grimaced. “What kind of a man does that?”

“Me, I guess,” I mumbled. And Toby. He’d stolen a couple of my girlfriends in college, so I didn’t think flirting with his girlfriend at a Christmas party was so bad. I didn’t want to talk about my brother, though, so I pushed him out of my mind, focusing on Katie.

“I don’t like men that do shady things like that,” she said firmly, and I fake groaned.

“So you’re telling me you won’t accept my drink?”

“What drink? You said you didn’t buy me one,” she replied dryly.

I flagged down the server. “Please bring me another whiskey, neat, and a...” I glanced at her but she didn’t say anything. “An apple martini,” I finished.

The server walked off, fighting her way through the crowd to get our drinks.

“You’re lucky I like apple martinis,” Katie muttered, and I smiled at her. She might come across as a little hard-to-get, but she was still sitting there, and that meant something. It meant she was at least somewhat interested.

“Good,” I told her. “I thought you might. Sweet, just like you.”

“You don’t know if I’m sweet or not,” she shot back, and I laughed, sitting back in my chair.

“I remember chatting with you at the Christmas party,” I said, speaking loud enough so she could hear me over the music.“You seemed very sweet. Maybe by the end of the night you’ll let me find out for certain.”

Katie frowned, leaning forward. “What was that?”

I didn’t think it was a good idea to repeat myself, since she was sort of on the fence about me already, so I cleared my throat.
