“After we get our drinks, why don’t we get out of here?” I asked. “Go somewhere... more quiet.”

“Let me guess,” she drawled. “Like back to your place.”

I smirked. “Well, since you brought it up?—”

“Let’s get one thing straight, mister,” she said, pointing a finger into my chest. I just grinned at her, too loose from the alcohol to care about her heated expression. In fact, it was cute more than anything else. “I’ve got no interest in you. Especially after what you did to Toby.”

“What I did to Toby?” Nowthat, I had to hear. What kind of tales had Toby been spinning about me?

“How you stole his inheritance all for that stupid airline you bought,” she hissed, and I snorted out a laugh.

“Oh, is that what he told you?” Funny, Toby had paintedmeout to be the evil brother, when it was him that was a snake.

“That’s the truth,” Katie said tersely and stood up. “You can keep the drink.”

“Wait just a minute,” I said, frowning up at her. “At least stay for one drink. I’ll be good, okay?”

Katie looked down at me, biting her lip. My eyes were focused on her mouth—I couldn’t help but wonder what she tasted like, what it would be like to kiss her.

I wanted to tell her about Toby, about how he’d turned everything around on me, but I didn’t think it was the place or the time.

She sat back down across from me, scooting her chair further away, and I leaned back further in my chair, nearly topplingover. I caught myself, though, thank God, and didn’t fall on my ass.

“Why did you call me over here?” Katie asked.

“Because you’re gorgeous,” I answered honestly. That was the most obvious reason, and sure, it was a bonus that she was Toby’s ex. “And because I have an idea.”

Katie looked at me warily. “An idea? What kind of idea?”

“You see, my brother is getting married.”

Katie blanched, and I felt bad for just a moment, seeing how her face crumbled at the news. “You’re not serious.”

“To the woman he cheated on you with, I believe,” I said over the music. Katie’s expression turned blank instead of looking so devastated.

I was interested in changing her opinion of me, proving that Toby was the bastard, not me, and I wasn’t sure why. She seemed like a challenge, and well, the one thing Toby and I had in common (other than our taste in women) was that we didn’t back down from a challenge.

“That’s none of your business,” she said in a voice so low I could barely hear it over the booming music.

I shrugged. “Maybe not. But I know how you can get back at him.”

“How’s that?” she asked, leaning forward, clearly intrigued, and I knew that I had her.

“Well, you could come with me to his wedding,” I said, and she raised an eyebrow. “As my date,” I finished.

Katie stared at me in awe. “That’s... pretty cruel.”

“As cruel as what he did to you? Wasn’t she one of your close friends?”

“Not that close, apparently,” she said bitterly.

“I could offer you more than just my company,” I said, and Katie raised her perfectly groomed eyebrow again.

“In what way?”

“I have money. Quite a lot of it, in fact, as you may have noticed.”

Katie looked me over, lingering on my six-hundred dollar shoes, , and nodded.
