“Yeah, I noticed.”

“I would pay you to be my date.”

She paled and narrowed her eyes at me. “Like an escort?”

I scoffed. “An escort? A classy lady like you? No way.” I grinned. “Now, if you want to extend the courtesy to my bedroom, I’m not going to complain...”

“Absolutely not,” she said flatly, and I just shrugged one shoulder.

“Either way, I’ve got plenty of beef with my brother and I’d like to see him taken down a notch,” I explained. “Think about it.”

I slid her my business card.

She took it and put it into her purse, which I thought was encouraging. Then she licked her lips and I tried not to stare at her mouth again.

She had such a full bottom lip; I could only imagine sucking it between my teeth.

“Just a date isn’t enough,” she said, causing me to raise an eyebrow of my own.

“Why not? You have something else in mind?”

“We’d need to pretend to be in a real relationship. A serious one. That’s what will hurt him.”

“You’re an evil genius,” I breathed, and Katie giggled.

It was a beautiful sound coming out of a beautiful woman.

I couldn’t wait for our date. I didn’t realize I’d said the words out loud until she blinked at me. “I haven’t said yes yet,” she said, and I laughed.

“That yet means that you will,” I replied as the server brought over our drinks. I sipped mine and she chugged hers, throwing it back in one gulp.

She stood up without another word and walked back over to her friends. I kept my eyes on her, watching the long lines of the back of her thighs, her hips swaying back and forth.

I licked my lips. I was going to taste her; I just knew it. And piss off my asshole brother all in the same night.

I really couldn’t wait.

Chapter 4

Katie

Ilay in bed, twirling the business card Adam had given me in my fingers. I felt my headache return after chugging that last apple martini; good thing I had gone home when the rest of my friends headed out to bar hop.

He wanted me to go as his date to Toby’s wedding, and I had suggested we pretend to be in a committed relationship. I knew that it would hurt Toby, but was that what I really wanted? I’d moved on, or at least told myself I did.

The fact that Toby was marrying Rachel meant that I’d have to face both of them again at the wedding, and I simply didn’t know if I could do that.

I started to question if I was really as over it as I believed I was. My stomach felt sick when I thought about the wedding, thought about seeing them together. Memories flashed in my mind of catching them in the act and I shook my head, pushing them away.

Adam Lanphier seemed to have plenty of money as he said, and he’d offered to pay me. He didn’t say how much, but I assumed it would be a pretty hefty sum given how he was throwing money around at that upscale club.

Curious as to what he was willing to pay, I rolled over and grabbed my phone, calling the number on the business card.

“Hey there,” he drawled, as if he knew it was me, and his voice sounded slightly hoarse, probably from drinking the night before.

“H-hello,” I stuttered. “It’s Katie.”

Adam just hummed in the back of his throat, and I could practically hear him smirking over the phone.
